Why you shouldn't put refreshing cubes in the toilet cistern
Every good housewife has sparkling clean plumbing. How nice it is to go to the toilet when it smells fresh! We go to such lengths to achieve the desired cleanliness! All kinds of tablets for tanks have long been on the shelves of hardware stores, but are they as effective as manufacturers and marketers say?

What is the purpose of the cubes?
They come in different shapes and sizes, differ in price, but play the same role:
- First of all, the products clean the drain tank of deposits;
- disinfect surfaces, kill pathogens that love to settle in the toilet;
- keep the bowl clean, helping to get rid of dirt on the walls;
- saturate the air with pleasant aromas;
- They color the water in shades of blue, pink or green.
Based on the type of installation, they can be divided into two types: those that are placed in the tank, and those that are mounted under the rim of the toilet. The second option is more economical, since the product is consumed only at the moment of rinsing. The external effect in the form of beautiful water and a pleasant aroma appears immediately, but cleaning is much more complicated.
What happens in practice
Judging by reviews and personal experience, cubes for the tank have almost no effect on the flushing efficiency; anyway, in the end you will need to pick up the brush and clean the toilet.
Many who have used the cubes have noted that the structural parts inside the tank last longer. This is achieved due to the fact that all plastic and rubber elements are gently cleaned of plaque.
Such things have become widespread due to the unusual color of the water and the pleasant smell that appears in the bathroom. But they don't last long! It should be remembered that the closer the tablet is to flushing, the sooner it is consumed. It has been noticed: if you place the product closer to the bottom on the side opposite from the water intake, it will last for 1.5-2 weeks, while a tablet placed at the flush hole “leaks” within several days.
You need to throw the product into the tank together with a transparent membrane, then it will wash out more slowly! True, some housewives complain that flakes form later, but most likely this depends on the quality of the purchased cube.
Is it possible to make your own tank freshener?
Interesting, but several recipes have already been invented on how to save on cubes! To do this, you will need a minimum of ingredients: essential oils are used for aroma, as well as water, gelatin, salt, vinegar and soda. Sometimes you can find mention of starch.
The closest thing to store-bought products are gelatin tablets!
You will need:
- 1 glass of water;
- 50 g gelatin;
- 25 ml 9% vinegar;
- 25 g salt;
- 25 g soda;
- any dye;
- favorite essential oils.
First, we make regular jelly from gelatin, mix in all the ingredients, cool and cut into pieces. Then we put it in the drain tank and use it. Cold water dissolves the gelatin very slowly, allowing you to enjoy your favorite flavor.
Homemade cubes, unlike store-bought ones, will not harm allergy sufferers!
On the Internet you can find an interesting life hack with toothpaste. Take a regular tube, carefully pierce it in several places and lower it into the drain tank. Toothpaste perfectly cleans all surfaces of plumbing equipment, both inside and outside. It gives the water a pleasant minty aroma. Of course, not just any paste will do; a metallized tube, for example, will slowly rust, and too thick a consistency will prevent the product from being washed out.
Let's sum it up
Logically speaking, what do we have? You can regularly spend money on cubes, but the toilet will still need to be cleaned. Yes, they disinfect, but ordinary household chemicals used for cleaning can also cope with this.
