What can be done from an old bathtub

Often after renovation the question arises of where to put the old bathtub. It’s a shame to throw it away, you can take it to a scrap metal collection point, but the benefit compared to the labor of delivery is a pittance. But it is quite possible to give a bathtub a second life, especially in a country house or garden plot. Depending on your imagination, it can be turned into a flower bed, an alpine slide, a pond or a swimming pool for children, a barbecue, a stove, a fireplace, and even DIY furniture. Next are a few ideas with photos.

Watering container

Garden plants do not like to be watered with cold water from a well, well or water supply. Therefore, it is preheated. By placing the bath in a sunny place, you can easily cope with this task.

The downside of such a solution will be some unaesthetics. The white color does not look very organic against the backdrop of well-groomed beds. You can hide such a container behind outbuildings, but it is better to get creative, for example, turning it into a cow. To do this, you can paint the bathtub with black spots, attach an udder from a rubber glove and draw a head on the plywood. A good mood will be ensured for everyone, including your neighbors.

Pond

Perhaps you have long dreamed of building a small pond in the garden, but after calculating what was needed for construction, you put the dream off until later. After all, it is necessary to make good waterproofing, reinforce the walls, strengthen them with concrete.

All this will not be needed if you turn your old bathtub into a reservoir. You don’t even have to drain the water from such a pond for the winter. You just need to put a few plastic bottles in it, pouring a little sand into them so that they can float in a semi-submerged position. Then the resulting ice will compress them and not tear the walls of the bathtub.

Along the banks of the reservoir you can plant hosta, bells, bergenia, ferns, iris or loosestrife. If you decide to grow water lilies or arrowheads in a pond, then add a little sand and silt to the bottom. It is more convenient to plant such plants in pots, then it will be easier to change the water by opening the drain hole at the bottom. In this case, do not forget to make drainage by pouring large pebbles underneath or burying an old bucket without a bottom. You can even build a small fountain.

To prevent the water from blooming, it must be changed periodically and used for irrigation. Or you can launch goldfish, crucian carp, catfish, loaches, or even guppies with swordtails. Of course, if there is somewhere to take them for the winter. In this case, your pond will not become a maternity hospital for mosquitoes, and the fish will be fed even without your participation.

It is better to take water for a pond from a natural reservoir or add at least a couple of buckets from a lake or river. To create a more complete ecosystem, you will also need snails - then you will not have to regularly clean the walls. To prevent the bottom and banks from being conspicuous by their unnatural whiteness, you will have to paint them.

The outside of the pond can be lined with stones and decorated with bird figures. The only problem with such a pond is that hedgehogs often get into it and cannot get out due to the slippery walls. This problem can be solved by placing stones on one edge flush with the edges.

Children's swimming pool

If you've bought inflatable pools for your children, you know that they are difficult to clean and don't last long. A bath that has become unnecessary is much better suited for this. Bury it, making drainage as described above and your kids will be happy. Just don’t forget to change the water on time.

Alpine slide

A jacuzzi is great for this, but a regular bath will do. Paint it, and after the paint has dried, fill it with soil, decorate it with stones and plant your favorite flowers or decorative greenery.

Flowerbed or bed

You don’t have to bury the bathtub, but simply paint it any color you like, fill it with soil and plant flowers in it. The drain should not be closed so that the water does not stagnate.

To make the plants feel good, water them more often, do not close the drain, lay drainage made of pebbles, crushed stone or expanded clay at the bottom, then a layer of compost, small branches, dry grass, and then humus and soil.

The bathtub is suitable not only for a flower bed, but also for growing heat-loving garden crops. Cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers or zucchini will delight you with a harvest much earlier if you plant them in such a bed. The outside of the bathtub should be painted a dark color so that it is better warmed by the sun. In spring, such a bed can be easily covered with film or lutrasil to protect your plantings from the night cold.

Important! If serious frost is expected, then it is worth insulating the sides of the container with straw mats so that the metal does not become a conductor of cold. The bottom will also need insulation. This is best done immediately, before installing the bed in place. Place branches, dry grass or straw under it, then the roots of the plants will feel comfortable.

Armchair or sofa for the garden

If you know how to handle an angle grinder, you can make a sofa or armchairs.To do this, mark a cut line on the outside and get to work. Just remember to give the tool a break, because cast iron is not a malleable material.

By cutting the bathtub along one of the walls, you will get a sofa on which all that remains is to put pillows and weld the legs, of course. And if you cut it across, you get a pair of chairs. You can also cut out a coffee table from the central part and place it all on your summer cottage.

The advantage of such furniture is not only its durability, but also the fact that you don’t have to put it away in the house, but only bring pillows into it. Just remember to grind down and sand the sharp edges of the cut.

Brazier

This grill holds the heat from the coals for a long time. It can be divided into several sections for simultaneous preparation of several dishes. And if there is another bathtub, then it can be used as a cover by welding door hinges. In this case, you will receive a wonderful oven, using which you will be able to fully realize your culinary talents. The grill is placed on bricks or pieces of pipe so that it does not touch the ground.

An old bathtub will also be useful for creating a permanent stove or fireplace. It is quite possible that you will find some other application possibilities. With a little work and imagination, it is quite possible to create a real work of art from an unnecessary object that has practical benefits.
