DIY wooden floor lamp
A floor lamp is not only a source of lighting in a room, but also a decorative element, since it creates a cozy and relaxing environment. Hours of reading an interesting book near him fly by unnoticed, which can also be said about gatherings in the company of friends or relatives. The assortment of them in furniture stores is quite large, but it is not always possible to choose a model that would fit perfectly into the interior - either there are no colors, or the price is high. As an option, you can make a floor lamp out of wood with your own hands, since it won’t require a lot of time and effort.

Author's solution - floor lamp made of wood
In addition to its direct purpose, such a product will be unique, because you definitely won’t find another like it anywhere. At the same time, the choice of design, size and finishing materials is limited solely by your imagination - in order to make a lamp, you can use literally anything. Author's products are most valued, since the craftsmen know everything and even more about woodworking, sculpting and firing ceramic elements, melting fancy glass shapes and forging metal parts.
Application in various interiors
It is possible to use a wooden floor lamp in any interior, however, you should not forget about compatibility - massive lamps are unlikely to look good in small, cramped rooms. They are most appropriate for styles such as:
- straightforward and unpretentious American country;
- more sophisticated, although just as rustic, Provence;
- cozy compact chalet house;
- stylish and discreet oriental;
- rough and angular rustic;
- luxurious and sweeping modern.
So different, they are all similar in one thing - simplicity of form. The materials used for finishing (stone, wood, glass, fabrics, ceramics) are environmentally friendly and natural, promoting relaxation and giving an enveloping atmospheric comfort.
Design features and operation
A floor lamp (aka “torch”, translated from French) is a floor or table lamp with light diffused due to the lampshade. Its height is selected individually, depending on the preferences and features of the interior, but it must exceed the height of the armchairs and sofa in order to spend time with it comfortably. You can increase it using resistors - they make it possible to adjust the lighting power, if necessary. In the photo you can see that the design of the floor lamp consists of 3 elements:
- Stable and massive stand.
- High support with internal hole for wiring.
- Decorative lampshade.
Each element can be made from any available materials. For example, a piece of log covered with stain or varnish looks good as a stand. A lampshade can be easily made from paper, a piece of fabric, wooden strips or glass beads.
Selecting the material
The choice of material depends entirely on the availability of woodworking equipment.If you have access to it, you can use edged timber; if not, thin branches of a tree or shrub. The latter option is simpler from the point of view of pre-processing - it will be enough to strip the branches from the bark and sand them with sandpaper. In addition, you can use an ancient lamp that you intended to throw in a landfill, an ownerless chandelier or sconce.
Making a stand
If you decide to use a pipe or several branches connected to each other for the rack, then there should be no questions. If you have the opportunity and desire to use a wood processing machine, you can perform a more interesting option. For this you will need:
- select a beam of the required length and secure it in the machine;
- using a chisel, smooth out the corners, bringing the shape to a rounded shape;
- process the workpiece and apply patterns on it with a cutter, then sand it with sandpaper;
- drill a hole in the center of the product for the wiring;
- cut a circle from a single sheet of durable plywood that will serve as a stand, with a desirable diameter of at least 50 cm;
- cover the finished structure with varnish, stain or paint.
If the machine is small, then you can assemble a stand from several short fragments.
Lampshade is an important component
Lampshade is an element the number of variations of which is truly limitless.. The least amount of time and effort will be required to make it from a balloon, thread and glue:
- the ball is inflated to the desired size;
- a thread is wound around it like a ball, after which it is carefully covered with PVA glue;
- after the glue has completely dried, the ball is deflated, and this must be done slowly so as not to damage the lampshade;
- A hole for the cartridge is cut out in the finished structure, and it is mounted on the stand.
Making a floor lamp from wood yourself is a fascinating and interesting process that does not require time and, most importantly, money. Unusual and stylish, the lamp will take a central place in your home, delighting with its appearance even when turned off.
