Restoring a floor lamp with your own hands - decoupage technique
As a rule, old lampshades on lamps do not look very beautiful; they have stains and scuffs. You can make repairs using the decoupage technique.
To work, you will need to prepare the following materials:
- The actual old floor lamp you plan to work with. It should have a thick lampshade; a fabric one will not work.
- Napkins for decoupage, large with the design you like.
- White napkins.
- Scissors.
- PVA glue.
- Wallpaper glue.
- Beads.
- Glue gun.
- Two brushes, one wide, the other small.
- Primer, white paint may also be suitable.
- Hairdryer and iron.
- Foam sponge.
IMPORTANT. For decoupage, you can choose the most ordinary napkin, which are sold in grocery stores. The main condition is that you like the drawing.
Next you need to prepare the lampshade. It often happens that there are defects on the lampshade; they need to be removed before decoupage begins. The defect can be removed by attaching a piece of plastic or cardboard. You need to glue note paper on the back side using PVA glue, and stick a clean napkin on the opposite side. Leave to dry.
When everything is dry, you need to start priming the product. After the primer has dried, you can begin decoupage:
- Prepare your chosen napkins. Remove two layers of white paper from them.
- The remaining thin layer of color must be ironed from the back side.
- Apply wallpaper glue to the item to be decorated.
- Work gradually. Having smeared one area, apply a napkin, pressing it evenly on all sides.
- In this way, cover the entire area of the product.
IMPORTANT. The napkin that was placed on the lampshade will be almost impossible to move in the future, work accurately and carefully.
Fold the napkins inward along the edges, this is necessary to make your work look good.
NOTE. There may be adhesive or air accumulation in some areas. They should disappear when the glue dries well.
When the entire area of the product is covered with napkins, coat it with glue and let it dry, you can use glue. Cover the product with acrylic varnish.
REFERENCE. You can use hairspray to coat the product. But keep in mind that in this case the lampshade cannot be washed.
Restoration with fabric
If you plan to radically change the fabric lampshade, this is also easy. To work, you need to prepare your favorite fabric and braid. You can’t do without an elastic band. For tools you will need scissors and a ruler, thread with needles and, if available, a sewing machine.
The lampshade restoration process follows the following algorithm:
- Remove the old lampshade and remove the fabric that will need to be replaced.
- Wash the frame.
- You can make a pattern using old fabric. Cut out the pieces and start sewing a new lampshade.
- You need to leave allowances at the top and bottom, which you will eventually turn into a drawstring for the elastic.
- Wrap the posts and rings of the frame with tape.
- Pull the sewn product onto the frame and pull the elastic into the drawstring.
Complete the decoration with the remaining prepared elements.
Unusual ideas
In addition to the options described, there are also unusual ones. You can decorate as follows:
- You can knit a lampshade.
- Use artificial flowers.
- Take lace and threads.
- Chinese lantern.
- Photos on the lampshade.
- Use the macrame technique.
