Banding on TV
The appearance of image problems on modern TVs is nonsense. It seems that technology has advanced so far that the occurrence of picture defects is simply impossible. However, no one is immune from banding - a dirty screen that appears, as a rule, due to factory defects or as a result of constant use.

What is banding
Banding is a television defect, also called a “dirty screen.” While watching TV, vertical stripes appear periodically or constantly. The image is darkened, has uneven borders - it becomes uncomfortable, even unpleasant to look at. The problem occurs for various reasons, including a malfunction of the TV receiver. The defect is best observed on a plain background or a gradient image.
IMPORTANT! Banding is precisely vertical stripes with various shades of colors.
A similar backlight problem (flickering that appears on LCD monitors) is often confused with color banding on a TV. Such a picture defect is determined by the quality of the incoming video signal.
Reasons for the appearance of banding on TV
There are many reasons for a defect to appear. Often it occurs due to the factory quality of parts, or due to constant use of the TV. Quite rarely, vertical stripes are caused by external problems (antenna signal level, etc.).
- Pressure inside the matrix. Different pressures across the entire area of the TV screen result in a scattering of illuminated areas. Most matrices do not have external pressure because they are installed in a durable housing. However, to one degree or another, another part may be placed on top - for example, a protective layer. It can press against the circuit in places, thereby causing the appearance of stripes.
- Unidentified manufacturing defect of the matrix. The most likely cause of vertical stripes, which occurs due to the irregular arrangement of LC cells over the entire area. This also includes the unevenness of light filters. The defect begins to appear when there are temperature deviations or vibrations.
- Electronic interference. The dissimilarity of the channels affects the brightness of the pixels, hence banding. The image defect occurs due to the accumulation of electromagnetic radiation or exposure to high temperatures. For example, when used for a long time, the TV itself heats up.
- A backlight defect occurs when the matrix is delaminate or the board is bent.
- Dust accumulation is possible but unlikely. Modern models are protected from external dust by a dense housing. However, dust can penetrate between the layers and accumulate along the edges.
These are the main reasons for the emergence of banding.
Advice! The defect is most often a factory defect; it is recommended to test the equipment before purchasing. This is not difficult to do; televisions in all large stores work directly on the shelves.
How to get rid of banding
The main way to get rid of, or rather temporarily correct an image, is gamma correction of the image. Bright colors will be better perceived and the resulting “dirt” will be less visible.
Another way is to simply replace the matrix in the service. You will not be able to solve the problem yourself, since the defect appears due to internal parts. Quite an expensive pleasure, sometimes it’s easier to buy a new TV.
