Bedroom in pastel colors
Pastel is the first association that comes to mind when the phrase “bedroom color” is mentioned. And it’s not even a matter of the “pastel – bed” association, but the fact that this muted color scheme perfectly calms the nerves, relieves physical tension and relaxes.

What is pastel
Pastels are colored artistic crayons that, when drawn, create a dense, dull texture. They contain little pigment, which is greatly ground during the production of chalk, so the color turns out unsaturated and muted.
If you move to the color wheel, then the pastel palette is color options with low saturation and brightness. It is these characteristics that determine the place of color in the spectrum. In life, we create pastels by adding white, and in graphics, by reducing brightness and saturation.
In the interior, pastel and its various variations are extremely often used by architects and designers due to the following characteristics:
- Pastel goes perfectly with a wide variety of colors in compositions and contrasts.
- Pastels can be used to dilute color combinations, increasing the number of colors in the composition almost to infinity.
What pastel colors can be used to create a bedroom design?
Any pastel shades are suitable for a beautiful and modern bedroom design. And what’s most interesting is that pastel colors can be implemented in almost every interior style - from Provence and country to loft and Scandinavian hygge. But in the design process, selection of finishing options, furniture and decor, you need to take into account certain circumstances that will help create a truly unique interior.
How to combine pastel colors correctly
When creating color compositions with pastel tones, despite their seemingly absolute compatibility, you should follow the rules:
- Pastel shades go well with so-called neutral colors - black, white, gray, dark blue, beige, khaki, brown, ivory.
- Designers often use a tool like the Ethan Color Wheel to select colors. On this circle, the colors are arranged according to the rainbow spectrum, with each color increasing in saturation from the center to the edge. So, if we transfer the rules of color composition to this circle, then it is believed that the colors look good: 2 colors located next to each other or diagonally; 3 colors – located through 3; 4 colors located 2 apart from each other.
- Pastel goes well with the brightly saturated colors of its spectrum - a monochrome bedroom made in pale blue and bright blue shades will look simply amazing.
How not to make a bedroom in pastel colors look faceless
Firstly, for a person with excellent taste, restraint never looks faceless. And secondly, if you want to add some zest to such an interior, there are many ways to do it professionally and boldly. Here are a few of them:
- Play with the textures of parts and materials. You can complete the entire interior in one shade, but at the same time add brutal details to the delicate palette. For example, a bedroom in coffee or beige color will be “diluted” by an armchair upholstered in genuine leather, or a dyed sheepskin carelessly thrown on the floor or on the bed, or even faux llama fur with long wavy pile. In a white bedroom, you can use an aged floorboard and door panel, and the imaginary “wornness” visible through the layer of paint will add naturalness and erase the feeling of sterility that this color scheme evokes. But bed linen made from crumpled boiled natural flax generally looks very textured and rich.
- Add bright details. For example, don’t buy plain curtains, but make them from several panels.
- Experiment with styles. Pastel is not only an empire classic. It can be minimalist Scandinavia, rich shabby chic, or even rough loft.
- Emphasize the unusual shapes. Instead of an ordinary bed, choose a soft round podium bed, and instead of a dressing table, choose a large full-length mirror mounted on the floor. Replace the three-door wardrobe with a rail, and the banquette with a frameless chair or pouf, or even a soft window sill.
Basic rules for creating a bedroom design in pastel colors
Light and pastel colors always visually expand the room, so this range will have a particularly beneficial effect on a narrow room. For a narrow bedroom, it is recommended to use a cool range of halftones, and it is not necessary to decorate the entire room in one shade. For example, the combination of bed linen and curtains looks very beautiful. For a spacious room, you can use both warm and cold shades.
It is better to give preference to matte and rough textures - they increase the color temperature and do not give that cold glossy shine that creates a feeling of coldness and alienation. But sometimes, when you need to make a room on the south side cooler, shades of blue, gray and white are used.
IMPORTANT! Don't clutter your bedroom. The abundance of white, pink and blue does not mean that the room can be filled to capacity with white angels, pink photo frames or blue feathers. The abundance of small details immediately takes us back 15 years, when classic pastel interiors were just becoming fashionable. But you don’t want your bedroom to look like a European renovation in the style of the 2000s.
How to make a bedroom interior in pastel colors with white furniture
An all-white bedroom has a very positive aspect - this design creates a feeling of cleanliness, impeccability and style. The eye does not get tired, there is a feeling of flight and lightness. But to avoid the “hospital” shade, you need to add a few spots of color, or introduce 1-2 accent colors from the pastel palette. For example, in a white Scandinavian bedroom, a minimalist ikebana made of branches or reeds will look very stylish. The monotony can be diluted with different textures.
If the bedroom has white furniture, then you can add color to the walls, or the “floor-ceiling” tandem, or “bed-curtains”.It will be very nice to introduce a third color in a monochrome palette in the form of a bright accent spot - for example, an abstract oil painting, or an unusual wall clock, wall panels or an armchair with bright upholstery. There is no need to make it smaller, as in patchwork - trendy and accent colors should be balanced.
How to create a bedroom design in pastel colors with dark furniture
In such a bedroom the furniture is the accent, so the background should be as monochromatic and calm as possible. At the same time, the furniture does not have to be “pressed” into the walls. The pastel space is capacious enough to “push” the physical boundaries of the interior, so there is no need to compress it by placing dark furniture along the contour. Decor chosen in accordance with the color wheel will look very stylish. For example, in a white bedroom with brown furniture, you can put an olive ceramic vase with ethnic patterns or hang an oil painting.
Organization of lighting in the bedroom
The sizes of chandeliers, lamps, floor lamps, as well as their number, must be strictly proportional to the size of the room. In a small room it is also dangerous to overdo it with the amount of light, as in a large room it is dangerous to underdo it. All important points in the bedroom should be “highlighted” - a basic chandelier on the ceiling, dim light near the head of the bed, spotlights near the mirror. Do not neglect decorative lighting - spotlights scattered on the podium, in wall ledges and on the ceiling will create a piquant play of light and shadow, which will create an additional play of shades.
