Why in Europe the toilet is near the bedroom, but in ours it is near the kitchen

1. Have you ever wondered why in foreign films, TV series, even in the legendary game The Sims, the toilet or combined bathroom is located near the bedroom? After all, the traditional Russian layout has taught us that this important room is located next to the kitchen. Now this situation seems inconvenient to many, but it is still quite difficult to find an apartment or house with a layout different from the usual one.

Difference in layouts

European apartments often look more spacious and bright with a smaller area. This is due to the fact that in Russia many people still prefer to have several rooms, albeit of a smaller size, than one large open space - the same studio layout that is very popular in Europe. But this is how things are with budget housing. The houses and apartments of people with above-average incomes often have several bathrooms, one of which is certainly located next to the bedroom. This trend is gradually being reflected in our modern room layouts.

Why is it common for us to build a toilet near the kitchen?

They began to place the toilet next to the kitchen everywhere even during the construction of the first Khrushchev-era apartment buildings.

There are several reasons for choosing this particular layout:

• budget savings;
• rational use of space;
• construction in a short time.

Today, such layouts are still found in small-sized high-rise residential complexes and small private houses. The immediate proximity of two rooms, such as a kitchen and a toilet, allows you to place one ventilation shaft for two rooms in a common space - in the wall between the toilet and the kitchen. In these rooms, powerful and constant air draft for ventilation must be provided. This layout is convenient not only from the point of view of economy, but also, probably, in terms of the strength of the structure, as well as the construction process itself. This significantly reduces the cost of the project as a whole. In addition to the ventilation shaft, all pipeline and sewerage elements are also laid in this “nook”, routing them in the required directions.

Of course, in new buildings of a more expensive segment and when building your own house, you can afford not to save and make two shafts, or even more, in different places of the house or apartment.

Where is it better and why?

If the dwelling is small and intended for the life of one person, then the location of the toilet is not so important and fundamental, because no one will be bothered by unpleasant odors or sounds at any time of the day or night. But if we are talking about a spacious house or apartment for a large family, then the location of the bathroom is an important point, especially if household members go to bed at different times or there are children in the family.

Some people find it difficult to sleep even when dim lights and the splash of water from the tap or when the tank is drained. In this case, placing the bathroom near the bedroom is not the best idea. If there is no such problem, and the living space allows it, it is possible and even necessary to equip several bathrooms in different areas.

For example:

• guest toilet, located in the reception area;
• for children, place it next to the child’s bedroom;
• a toilet opposite or next to the parents' master bedroom, intended for spouses only. The entrance to it can be made directly through the bedroom.

From the point of view of Feng Shui, in order to maintain harmony in the living space, it is not advisable to place the toilet next to the sleeping area. A particularly unfavorable layout is one in which the bed is located along the wall adjacent to the toilet or the headboard to it. This situation can lead to various kinds of complexes, illnesses and failures in love relationships.

Whether to follow the principles of Feng Shui or not is everyone’s business, because when creating a layout or choosing a finished home, you should first of all rely on your habits and preferences.
