Where is the best place to store bed linen to make it last longer?
Storing bedding in a separate linen closet or a trendy chest is the best option. But sometimes the dimensions of the apartment do not allow you to acquire personal furniture. Today I will tell you where to find a convenient place for things and what you should consider when choosing it.

General rules
Moderate (not higher than 60%) air humidity and a temperature range from +15°C to +35°C guarantee the best preservation of any fabrics. However, pillows and blankets easily absorb odors, so you should make sure that sources of strong odors are kept away. Best of all, not even in the next room.
Another important point during long-term storage is insects. To avoid the appearance of colonies of parasites such as moths or bedbugs, it will be enough:
- Regularly, at least once every three months, ventilate blankets and pillows that have been stored for a long time.
- Use repellents. They can be purchased at any hardware store.
Important! Insect repellents should not come into contact with bedding. This can cause stubborn stains to appear. Violation of this rule also leads to a decrease in the effectiveness of the repellent, because the smell will be distributed unevenly.
In addition, regular ventilation prevents the fillers from caking, preventing the loss of their shape and the formation of creases.
Almost like vampires
Different materials require an individual approach. So, for example, bamboo fibers only need protection from dust. But it is advisable to pack woolen blankets in cotton bags or bags. This will allow them to “breathe”, which will eliminate the appearance of a musty smell. And dust won’t get through such protection. A blanket made from eucalyptus fibers is also usually stored in this package. However, it is important to avoid direct sunlight on the product.
Down and feathers are not so demanding when it comes to packaging. The only thing you can’t do is send them in vacuum bags. Yes, it helps prevent dust mites, dampness and unpleasant odors. But it will be difficult to return compacted blankets to their original shape after such storage. But cotton loves a vacuum! In addition, blankets made from this hygroscopic material are best packed in waterproof bags.
Save figure
Pillows, regardless of the filling, should not be left without air access for a long time, especially in vacuum bags. The latter is a guarantee of volume loss. And in some cases it is simply impossible to restore the original shape of the pillow.
In addition, it is important to consider that synthetic fillers require frequent ventilation and periodic washing at a temperature of 60°C. And down and feathers should be ventilated in sunny weather at least once every three to four months. Once a year they generally need cleaning, which is performed in special workshops.
Where should I store everything?
Returning to the beginning, the most suitable place for these purposes is a separate closet or chest. But the least suitable are the attic, balcony and other rooms with poor temperature and humidity control. But it also happens that there is no separate furniture. In this case, you can use:
- Drawers installed under the bed.
- Hidden shelves at the head.
- Mezzanine.
- Drawers under the sofa.
- Banquettes purchased for these purposes.
Bed linen can also be stored with clothes. However, in this case, you need to allocate a section with a separate door and solid walls for blankets and pillows. This will limit contact with other things, so that the stored bedding can be provided with an optimal microclimate.
Plus, most of these tips apply to other fabric items as well. Moisture, open spaces, direct light - they harm both your favorite pillow and your brand new cardigan. That is why it is better not to organize a “chair with things to wash.”
