Lugs for walk-behind tractors: what are they and why are they needed?
In fact, lugs are wheels of a special shape and for a special purpose. They are put on the walk-behind tractor for the purpose site treatment from weeds.
The rim of this device, also called the runner, is made of metal. Hooks are welded along its entire circumference at a certain distance. They are made in the form of arrows. It is these parts that provide better grip on the ground. In addition, such attachments also make the equipment heavier, providing it with greater stability.
These devices are important for work on any farm. No special skills are required to attach and operate them, so even a beginner can handle them.
What are there, how to choose the right one
There are several types of lugs:
- solid - have a width of up to 130 mm, used for working between rows, when both wheels must be so narrow as not to touch the plantings;
- double-slide - small devices that are fixed to the gearbox of small walk-behind tractors for operation with one hiller;
- three-flange - large varieties with a width of 200 mm, used for the most difficult work - plowing.
The lugs also differ in height. This parameter ranges from 250 to 600 mm. Devices of a certain height are needed to solve specific problems. For example, the optimal height suitable for plowing is 400-500 mm, for single-row hilling - 300-425 mm, for double-row disc hilling - 600 mm.
These parameters must be taken into account when choosing.
When purchasing lugs, you should also pay attention to whether it is possible to install weighting materials. They make the use of equipment on loose soil more efficient, especially if the work is done with light varieties of walk-behind tractors.
Weights are durable metal containers that need to be filled with a load: stones, sand or something else.
For walk-behind tractors weighing up to 120 kg, lugs are an indispensable attribute that ensures speed and ease of use. Manufacturers, as a rule, supply heavier models with tractor tires that have a reinforced tread. For this technique, lugs are not needed.
