Lawn mower device
A lawn mower allows you to achieve a smooth, well-groomed lawn. Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of equipment. In order to choose and operate correctly, you should know how the lawn mower works and what its operating principle is.

What is a lawn mower
This is equipment designed for cutting grass and maintaining the lawn. It is believed that it consists of a body and cutting elements. In fact, the unit is more complex and has more parts. It all depends on the type of lawn mower.
The equipment is divided into self-propelled and non-self-propelled models. The latter lacks wheels and drive. You need to move it yourself. The device is lightweight and low power, so it is often used for processing small areas.
The self-propelled model has wheels and blades that are activated by a motor. When working with such equipment, you only need to guide it. For large areas or difficult terrain, this mower is suitable.
The motor of many models is mounted on a special platform. The shaft is placed parallel to the ground and the cutting element is mounted in this area. This could be a fishing line or a knife. A special fastening mechanism allows the cutting parts not to be disrupted when they encounter an obstacle.
General features of gasoline and electric lawn mowers
It was noted that there are several types of lawn mowers. They differ in engine type and can be petrol or electric. The first option consists of a tank where fuel is poured, a piston system and an air filter. The design is also supplemented with a carburetor, a starter and a system that supplies fuel and ignites it.
The volume of the tank is limited by a temporary resource that allows the lawn mower to work without stopping. The equipment then needs a break to cool down. Electric models are designed differently, so they need to be stopped every 15–30 minutes.
Electric options are equipped with a wire for connecting to the network. When used on a large area, an extension is additionally used to move the mower around the entire perimeter.
There are also battery-powered models. Their device has a battery pack that needs to be charged. The battery capacity affects the operating time of the tool. There are also robotic mowers. In addition to the main parts, they are equipped with special sensors. This allows them to navigate the terrain and deal with grass without human intervention.
Common parts that make up any modern lawn mower include:
- Engine. Placed vertically. Its operating principle is similar to a car engine.
- Deca. This is the equipment frame that serves as the basis for installing other elements. The higher the deck, the better the grass is sucked in. Classified according to the material from which it is made. Aluminum is considered the most reliable for decks. Steel has a high risk of corrosion, and plastic wears out quickly.
- Grass catcher. Necessary for collecting cut grass. The larger the mower, the larger the grass catcher it has. Can be made of plastic or synthetics. The first option is rigid, cleans better and is more convenient to unload, but may miss small grass. The synthetic grass catcher is soft. It does not allow small blades of grass to pass through, but it is more difficult to clean.
- Cutting elements. These include knives or fishing lines. Placed parallel to the mowing surface. The shape and fastening system of cutting parts is individual - depends on the manufacturer and model.
- Wheels. They are classified by size, fit and tread shape. Budget options are equipped with conventional plastic wheels. On more expensive lawn mowers they are rubberized and have a larger diameter. Equipment with 4 wheels is more common.
- Levers and handles. Necessary for operating the mower. It’s good if the lever fits comfortably in your hand and is complemented with soft inserts.
- Bumper. It protects the lawn mower elements from obstacles. It also allows you to conveniently carry equipment.
Some models may have additional features. To perform them, the mower is equipped with other elements.
What are the differences between lawn mower designs?
Based on the type of design, mowers can be divided into the following types:
- Wheeled. They resemble carts equipped with 4 wheels and handles. They can move independently if there is an engine or be controlled entirely by the mower himself. This type is the most common.
- Petrol with seat. They are a mini car on 4 wheels with a driver's seat and a steering wheel. Used for large areas. There is no need to carry the mower or walk with it, which means less fatigue from work.
- Automatic. These are robotic models, distinguished by their autonomy. They are battery operated and require minimal human intervention. They have several wheels, are compact in size and resemble a small vacuum cleaner in appearance.
How does a lawn mower work?
All lawn mowers operate on the principle that the engine drives the cutting elements. They begin to rotate, due to which the grass is cut. When rotating, an air flow occurs. This helps lift the grass blades up. Before starting work, it is necessary to set a certain height at which the lawn will be cut. On this level and the grass is cut.
Then, using the air flow, the cut plants are sent to the grass catcher compartment. If it is not there, then the grass is simply thrown out from the side or from below.
The structure of a lawn mower is simple. The main elements are the engine and cutting parts. Additional functions increase their number in the device. It is recommended to pay attention not only to the components themselves, but also to the materials from which they are made.
