How to fix an expandable irrigation hose

Self-extending hose became a real breakthrough in the world of gardening. At first, gardeners treated the product with great doubt, but over time, having understood all its advantages, they trusted and began to buy and actively use it. But what if it ruptures or develops a leak? We'll help you figure out how to do this easily and quickly.

How to repair a self-extending irrigation hose?

Every gardener has a watering hose in his arsenal of tools. Often the choice falls on a stretchable model, as it is convenient to use and store, is lighter and does not take up much space.

The accordion hose is a lightweight and convenient watering tool with an ergonomic nozzle that operates in different modes.

Despite the quality of the material from which the watering hose is made, it also becomes unusable. Cracks, creases and abrasions may appear on the surface. But don’t rush to get rid of it in order to spend a lot of money on buying a new one, because it can be repaired. And there are several ways to do this.

Rubber glue

A hose that has served for several seasons in a row may be damaged, broken or cracked. Don’t rush to throw it away: it can be repaired, after which you can use it for a couple more seasons.

In this way, a cut or puncture of the watering hose is usually eliminated.

Having found the puncture site, degrease the area by wiping with alcohol. Next, we begin to squeeze out the glue, making sure that it does not get inside the tube. Otherwise, the result will be unsatisfactory and the hose will break in another place. After waiting for it to dry, you can start watering.

Tire repair kit

A special set can be found in stores for motorists. The hose at the site of damage is wiped dry with a clean rag, and then treated with alcohol or nail polish remover.

After the damaged area has dried, cut out a suitable patch and coat it with glue. Then they apply it to the puncture and press it into place. For better grip, place a small weight on top.

Insulating tape

You can use duct tape to fix many things around the house, and a watering hose is no exception. The main thing is to find the place of damage, degrease it and, after waiting for it to dry, wrap it tightly with adhesive tape.

Please note that this method cannot be used to repair large cuts or fractures. This option is only suitable for small punctures.

Using a hose

The damaged area can be easily covered with a cut from another rubber tube. It will not allow the structure to assemble and stretch again as before, but the watering hose will still last for some time.

First, find the place of damage and degrease, measure the length of the damaged hose and add a couple more centimeters. Cut a piece of rubber tube and divide it lengthwise, put it on the damaged area, securing it with electrical tape or adhesive.

To make the adhesion more reliable, it is better to degrease the surface first.

Connector

This method is intended for high-quality repairs of large damage. You can buy a special connector in a store or find a rubber tube with a smaller diameter than the watering hose.

Additionally, you will need scissors, metal clamps or thick wire.

The damaged area is cut out, capturing a couple of centimeters of the “healthy” hose. Instead, a “donor” is inserted and secured with clamps. For reliability, wrap the sleeve with electrical tape - this will prevent water from leaking out under high pressure.

A useful skill for a gardener is to be able to repair a watering hose yourself. This helps extend the life of the garden tool and save some money.
