What can you grow on your windowsill?

In winter, I really crave fresh herbs and vegetables. In stores we are usually offered watery tomatoes and cucumbers that do not smell of anything. Where can you get vitamins? There is an exit! Today I want to talk about how to grow your own vegetable garden on the windowsill!

Why is this necessary?

For those who have doubts, I will give reasons in favor of home-grown vegetables:

  1. Perfect for practical people. Instead of another geranium, you can put a pot of parsley and stock up on useful substances all year round.
  2. Saving! Buying seeds is much cheaper than buying greens in a supermarket, even if they have announced huge discounts.
  3. Aesthetics. I cannot ignore this point, since the color green has long been considered an excellent calming color, and it is so lacking in modern cities.
  4. A hobby that benefits everyone in the household.
  5. A visual aid to botany for children: you can combine business with pleasure and conduct small educational activities at home.
  6. Always fresh vitamins for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Now let's get to the fun part! I have collected the most popular plants for growing on a windowsill.

Greens: parsley, dill, celery, mint, lemon balm, sorrel, lettuce, basil and others. They do not require special care and can be planted in flat flower pots.

Celery and parsley grow well from rhizomes, so they are not pulled out, but cut, leaving cuttings.

Green onions. It can be grown in water or soil and is one of the easiest plants to grow at home.

Cucumbers. It is important to pay attention to the variety here. There will be no bees at home for pollination, so we be sure to choose a self-pollinating hybrid, preferably early ripening. It would be ideal if you choose a bush cucumber. It is important to remember that they love light, warmth and watering.

Tomatoes. We also choose self-pollinating, early hybrid varieties! I can recommend dwarf cherry tomatoes; due to their small size, they have time to ripen on the vine. Almost all tomatoes prefer rare but abundant watering, light, and are not afraid of drafts.

Some manufacturers even mark the possibility of growing vegetables from their seeds on a windowsill, so be sure to read the description on the bag.

Bell pepper. It will require patience, since the harvest after germination of the seed will only take 5-6 months. For the home garden, experts advise choosing universal varieties of self-pollinating hybrids. You can take a closer look at the early and mid-early varieties of pepper. This southern plant prefers a lot of sun, does not tolerate drafts and responds very well to loosening the soil.

Beans. The plant pollinates itself, produces pods within 2 months after planting, and is very unpretentious, which is why beans are so popular among beginning gardeners. If possible, choose climbing varieties; they will beautifully decorate the trellises and give the room the appearance of a winter garden. As an alternative, there are bush beans.
