Do-it-yourself tandoor in the ground

Tandoor is an Asian version of a barbecue oven. It is easy to use and convenient to place in the area in front of the house. There are several ways to make it yourself. How to make a tandoor in the ground? It is necessary to carefully study the instructions, recommendations, and also prepare the necessary tools.

How to make a tandoor in the ground with your own hands

The oven is quite easy to use. Just add fuel, light it, wait a little, and you’re ready to cook. Heat transfer occurs from clay walls. Dishes prepared in this way are considered the most healthy.

The fryer can be used for a long time, and thanks to its high efficiency, it is easy to reduce fuel costs. Products in a tandoor retain their juiciness and vitamins, so building such a stove on site is a good solution.

It is prohibited to flood the structure with water to extinguish. This will provoke a sharp temperature change, which will lead to the appearance of cracks in the layers of clay. It is better to wait until the fireplace cools down on its own.

There are several construction options:

  1. The above-ground part of the product rises approximately 20 cm above the surface. A base is built from bricks, then an air duct is constructed by placing a steel pipe in the ditch. When the work is completed, the resulting gaps between the walls of the stove and the pit are filled with earth.
  2. The second option is recommended for implementation in rocky or clayey areas with high density. First, they begin to dig two wells. The first one is for creating a tandoor and corresponds to its dimensions. Air supply to the brazier will be organized through the second well.

It is worth noting that an earthen tandoor is suitable not only for preparing tasty and healthy dishes, but also for heating a home. It heats up to high temperatures and retains heat for a long time.

Preparation of tools and materials

Before construction, you should prepare everything you need. Brick with high heat-resistant characteristics must be used. You will need purified clay and sand (it is better to take fine sand). You need to prepare cement, a level, fireclay mortar, a shovel, an angle grinder, facing tiles, masonry mesh and a metal grate.

Additionally, containers are selected in which various materials, including clay, will be mixed and conveniently placed.

Stages of work on making an earthen tandoor

Before starting work, it is recommended to draw up an action plan. The process of constructing a tandoor consists of preparing a drawing on which all the dimensions and data of the future brazier are noted. Then they begin to search for a suitable location and dig a hole. Prepare the necessary materials and lay out the brick. External finishing and first firing are carried out.

The step-by-step process of creating an Asian version of a stove in the ground looks like this:

First, determine the desired dimensions. A standard earthen tandoor is 80 cm in diameter and its depth is 40 cm. You can make it larger, but then the consumption of materials increases, and construction will take longer.

When igniting the stove, its flame may be higher than the level of the tandoor. It is recommended to choose a suitable location for the fryer, taking this factor into account. There should be no objects nearby that could easily ignite. It is recommended to keep a distance of several meters from them.

The next stage is calculating the required amount of material. Then they dig a hole and prepare it, making sure to dry it.

Start laying out the bricks. They are laid in one row, having previously applied a fireproof mixture to the bottom of the base. Then a chimney is formed using a grinder. Rectangular holes must be made in the metal pipe. The first is located at a distance of 10 cm from its lower part, and the second - at 20 cm. One serves as a blower, and the other as a hood.

Continue laying bricks until there are five rows. At the same time, it is necessary to cover up the resulting cracks. For this, clay with good refractory properties is used. Leave the structure for five days to dry. You shouldn't cover it.

Start installing the chimney. A pre-prepared pipe is placed inside it. It is recommended to cover the formed joints with clay. Start laying out the ground part. Once the work is completed, you can line this area with brick.

Build a lid. It is recommended to do it in a dome-shaped form. Making a dome out of clay is quite difficult for a beginner. Therefore, you should take a standard metal lid from a large-capacity pan. When the first layer of clay on the structure has dried, begin applying the second. For convenience, use a spatula. Leave until the applied layers are completely dry.

In conclusion

After completing the construction of the earthen tandoor, it is necessary to carry out the first firing. This will make sure that the ventilation and blower are working properly and check the strength of the clay.

If the roasting was successful, you can start cooking. Products are loaded only when the firewood is completely burned and has become coal. As a rule, you can start cooking 30 minutes after lighting the stove.

When the grill has completely cooled down, the soot must be removed. To make the tandoor dry out faster, it is recommended to build it on dry, warm days.
