DIY brick tandoor

Tandoor is a reliable and durable oven-roaster that is placed outdoors. You can build it yourself by preparing the necessary tools and carefully studying the instructions.

What are the ways to create a tandoor from brick?

One of them is standard cladding. Strictly speaking, this is not a full-fledged creation of a furnace from scratch, but a so-called modernization of a finished device. After all, the disadvantage of a conventional purchased product is mobility and fragility. Such a tandoor cannot simply be left in the yard of the house, since it can be stolen or destroyed, so the oven-broiler is additionally lined with building materials to make the structure more stationary. The brick is placed rectangularly, so you don’t have to adjust it exactly to the shape of the stove. The voids formed between the product and the masonry are filled with sand or salt. The latter has better heat capacity.

The tandoor can be made entirely of brick - from scratch. They begin by creating a separate foundation, where a structure of the desired shape is subsequently erected. This option is more labor-intensive and time-consuming.

The tandoor can differ in shape - it can be vertical and horizontal. Before creating a product, you should decide on its type.

The options for using bricks also differ. You can take the whole material or its halves. There is also a way in which it is installed on a poke.

Creating a base for the oven

They start by preparing the necessary materials and tools. You will need:

  1. Brick. Be sure to be fireproof and fireclay. With its help, the walls of the furnace will be erected, and a reasonable thermal load will be placed on the building material. The quantity depends on the size of the grill and the thickness of its walls. On average, from 300 to 1,200 pieces are required.
  2. Solution. It is recommended to do it yourself. It is enough to mix clay with water and sand. You can purchase a ready-made heat-resistant mixture with a fireclay base. It is important to make sure that the chosen solution can withstand high temperatures for a long time.
  3. Reinforced rods and concrete. Used to create the base of the structure.
  4. Bars or boards. Needed to form a template for the future furnace.
  5. A piece of pipe whose diameter is more than 10 cm. Used for blower. If there is no pipe, you can do this with a brick.

When the necessary materials are ready, they begin to prepare the foundation. A base is needed due to the fact that a brick oven has a large mass. Creating a foundation consists of the following steps:

  1. Preparing a pit with a depth of about 60 cm. The diameter should be at least 20 cm larger than that of the future furnace.
  2. The bottom is covered with geotextile, and crushed stone is poured on top of it, the layer of which is 15 cm. Then comes the turn of sand. Waterproofing material can be laid on top of it.
  3. The reinforcement is installed, then the concrete is poured.

The base can be made more recessed or raised above the surface.

Made from whole brick

It was noted that a tandoor is created from whole pieces of brick or from halves. In the first case, it is not necessary to make a template. The initial circle of material is laid out dry. It is recommended to calculate in advance how many bricks will be used for each row, based on the size of the material. It is also necessary to trim the corners to make the shape more oval and without sharp edges.

If there are 8 bricks in one row, then the diameter of the internal base will be from 33 to 35 cm. To increase this indicator (48–51 cm), it is enough for the row to consist of 10 bricks.

The top two rows begin to taper towards the neck. To do this, you need to shorten the bricks by 1 cm for the penultimate order, and by 2 cm for the last. The height of the oven also depends on the number of rows.

How to make a tandoor from brick halves

The technology for creating a roasting pan from halves is not fundamentally different from the previous version. It is necessary to cut the material into two parts with a grinder, and trim the corners of each half. This method is suitable if you do not plan to cover the outer part of the structure with clay and do not carry out cosmetic finishing, which will allow you to create a tandoor of a more traditional shape, reminiscent of a jug.

The operating algorithm is similar. They start by calculating the order and calculating the size of the cut corners. Then the base is prepared, the halves of the bricks are prepared and the laying begins. To make the process easier, it is recommended to prepare a pattern. It is important that the first row is continuous. They begin to equip the blower from the second row.

The advantage of using this method is the creation of a smooth inner surface of the product. She is immediately ready to prepare flatbreads. But such masonry is quite fragile, so it is necessary to strengthen the structure. To do this, use a wire harness, and cover it on top with a solution of cement or clay.

They start by calculating the order. For a stove with a neck diameter of 40 cm and a base of 60 cm, 28 bricks will be required for the initial 2 rows. For subsequent ordering, use 23, then 19.

Start preparing the patterns. This is a special frame, the lower base of which should be equal to the radius of the furnace being created, and the upper base should be equal to the neck. Inside the pattern, jumpers 30 and 25 cm long are installed, located parallel to the base. They are fixed in increments that correspond to the length of the brick. The curved part of the pattern must be bent from a thin strip and secured to the ends of the bars of the base and lintels.

The resulting pattern must be placed in the center of the base. After this they begin to turn. One time is equal to the thickness of a brick. The first row is set dry. The calculated gap of the internal seam is 3 mm.

Prepare a solution based on the oven masonry mixture. Take out one brick at a time from the row and lower it into water, cover with mortar on 3 sides, including the butt and both beds. Then they are returned to their place. It is not necessary to coat the brick with mortar only where the ash pit will be located.

When laying out the third row, the building material is installed with a slope towards the center. When the construction of the furnace is completed, its outer surface is finished. You can cover the inside with clay. Leave to dry for several weeks. Then you need to carry out the initial heating. When these activities are completed, the firing of the kiln begins.

The tandoor is suitable for preparing a variety of dishes and can become a real decoration of the yard. You can not only buy it, but also do it yourself. It is enough to prepare the necessary materials, tools and follow the instructions.
