DIY portable tandoor
Many of those who live in a country house or often visit their country houses dream of owning a tandoor. This is a roasting oven designed for outdoor use. The dishes in it are not only tasty, but also healthy. It is quite possible to make such a design yourself. Moreover, it can be made as stationary tandoor made of bricks or clay, and portable (mobile). Let's figure out how to do the last option.

Features of a portable tandoor
The portable version differs from a stationary stove, which can be installed even in the ground or on a concrete foundation, in that it can be moved to any area of the site. To make a mobile structure yourself, you need to make a ramp for transportation and the oven itself. As a basis for the latter, you can take the body of a gas boiler or an ordinary 200 liter barrel. If a very small volume is enough, then even a saucepan will do.
A common portable version can be made from a clay flower pot or bucket. Let's look at how to make such a design and how to get a stove on wheels.
How to build a portable tandoor
To do this you need to prepare:
- three clay flower pots - a large floor-standing, medium and table-top version with a perforated bottom;
- a weight with a hole in the center (a weight for a dumbbell or barbell is suitable);
- stones used in landscape design;
- hacksaw
The procedure for creating a portable stove looks like this:
- Take a large pot and place it vertically.
- The smallest container is placed in it, in the bottom of which holes are pre-made.
- For stability, a weight is placed inside this pot (it will act as a firebox).
- The resulting structure is checked for reliability - if it moves easily when swinging, then a heavier load must be used.
- Then the bottom of the middle pot is sawed off (it does not need to be thrown away).
- The container with the bottom cut off is turned over and placed in a large pot.
- The space between the large and medium containers is filled with stones used in landscape design.
- For greater thermal conductivity, sand or salt can be added to the stones.
The cut off bottom is used as a lid. To operate a homemade tandoor, you need to pour coal into the throat formed by the middle pot and set it on fire. You should start cooking after everything has burned out.
How to build a mobile roaster with your own hands
To implement this idea, it is necessary to make a cart. Take a strong metal stand - you can build it yourself. First, a frame is welded from iron tubes, and then the axles for the wheels are fixed to it. A base is made on the stand, which is a covering of bricks, which is held together with mortar. A handle is attached to the device for convenience.
Construction of a tandoor
The basis of the furnace itself is a holder - any whole metal container. Before installing it on the platform, cut off the end part. The filler neck will take its place.
A mobile oven begins with an ash pan, which serves as a heat source.An opening for it needs to be cut at the bottom of the container. The latter is placed on a mobile platform. Weld brackets in it and install a grate, preferably cast iron.
Next you need to start marking and adjusting the bricks. Then you should line the clip with them from the inside.
Reference. The bricks are cut to the required size using a diamond wheel.
Having built the ash pit, apply mortar, then place the next row of bricks.
Having laid out three levels, install the blower door. This section is lined with bricks in the shape of a trapezoid. On the outside it is narrower than on the inside. Then a kind of plug is made from brick, which is equipped with a handle. It is used to tightly close the vent. Then continue laying until the end.
Cast iron rings work well for the tandoor lid. This way the oven will not lose the accumulated heat, and you can place iron dishes on top of it, on which it will be convenient to heat a portion of food.
Accessories for tandoor - mesh for arranging skewers and brackets - are made of reinforcement. They are fixed inside the oven along the edges of the working chamber.
Be sure to insulate the roasting pan. An excellent option is a layer of basalt wool. A foil sheet is placed on it. The oven is coated on both sides. For cladding, you can use clay or building mixture.
Upon completion of installation, the tandoor needs to be calcined. To do this, a fire is lit in it, but first with paper or coal. Then they add wood chips. The heat is increased gradually. After 4–5 calcinations, the oven is allowed to cool. This process does not need to be accelerated - it should happen naturally: this way the structure will become truly strong.
