Why do you need a plate holder?
When guests arrive, the tables should already be set. We always start with a plate on which cutlery and napkins lie. It's called a serving room. It is also called a pantry or simply a plate.
When any dish is brought to a guest, it is not placed directly on the tablecloth. There must be a plate underneath. This particular dish indicates the number of people sitting at the table. Guests are seated where the serving utensils are.
Important! It is not customary to place even empty portion plates for appetizers directly on the tablecloth.
The use of plates is appropriate not only at formal feasts, but also at ordinary family dinners. Agree, They are convenient for serving hot dishes, pots, broths etc. They can also serve as a stand for cutlery. This etiquette rule is due to the fact that a hot dish can stain the tablecloth, and drops or crumbs may get on it.
How to use a placeholder plate correctly
There are secrets to using this cookware.
What should a plate be like?
Serving plates may not be included in the dinnerware set. In this case, they will need to be purchased separately. Here are some tips to help you choose a plate stand.
Important! The correct stand must meet three rules: match the shape of the main dish, be flat. And also be larger in size (no less than 2.5 cm from the edge) of the dishes in which cooked dishes are served
- It is not necessary that the material and design be the same as other items. But A mandatory requirement is the harmony of the plate with the entire service, as well as with the design of the table or tablecloth.
- A universal option would be to purchase gilded or silver plated plate. These stands are ideal for any color service. If your cookware has a silver rim, choose a silver-plated stand. Same thing with the gold border.
- Another universal option - white plate. But there is a possibility that the entire service will look much simpler. The situation can be corrected by beautiful perforation on the sides, pearls or relief.
Advice. If you are a fan of minimalism and prefer white cutlery, you can purchase contrasting serving plates, such as black ones. To complete the serving, buy some more black dishes: cups, salad bowls, salt shakers, etc.
- Those who like non-standard design solutions will find dishes suitable made of wood or its imitation.
- Rough ceramics will go well with wicker dishes. But the downside of this solution is that any spilled liquid risks ending up on the tablecloth.
- An unusual and fashionable solution would be to use transparent glass. Fans of high-tech style will appreciate it.
- If you have crystal glasses, vases or salad bowls, then look towards quartz plates that imitate crystal.
How to install and remove
The stand should be located strictly opposite each chair prepared for the guest. Don't place the placemats too close or too far from the edge of the table. The optimal distance to the edge is 2.5 cm.
Previously, after they took away one dish and brought another, they had to change the plates. But now it is acceptable for appetizers and main courses to be served without changing the stand plates.
Important! Subplates are never used when serving dessert.
Even if they are left on the table in a restaurant, the cutlery will be removed. You cannot do this yourself: this is the responsibility of the waiter. You can only politely remind him of this need.
How to replace a substitution plate
Nowadays, variations on the theme of serving plates are allowed. Its role can be played by wooden coasters, which are ideal for hot dishes. In some establishments, dishes are served directly in a frying pan, which is placed on a wooden stand.
In appearance, these stands are very reminiscent of an invariable attribute of any kitchen - a cutting board. There may be special recesses for containers with sauces.
Another alternative is to replace the stand with a heat-resistant cloth.
Of course, a feast can go well without stands. But if you want your meeting to look solemn and prestigious, do not forget to place a plate under the plate.
Why this crap??? Different times, different needs. Those who have nothing to do are foolish. And in general, why did the author decide that everyone around is idiots??? I'm fed up with these worthless teachers.
There were no washing machines in the days of wildcards. Now they are appropriate where the eaters at the table are constantly changing, but the tablecloth remains, i.e. in restaurants, etc.
And in Mordovia I was at a wedding, there weren’t even tablecloths, when changing dishes the guests came out to breathe, and the hostess scraped the table with a knife! But all these wisdom were invented by Europeans, they wanted to show off, and out of poverty. They ate a dry pancake with leftover dinner and called it pizza, or the guards called frogs and moldy cheese (which the Russian housewife threw away) “haute cuisine”! Charlemagne's courtiers ate meat with their hands, but this does not mean that they were uncultured!
A completely empty article. And to the question posed in the title “Why do you need a plate under the plate?” there was no answer. I think this is because the author herself does not know the answer to her own question. I wanted to get smart, so I came up with this article.
If the article is not interesting and relevant, why are you reading it? You can eat with your hands on the newspaper if it bothers you, and don’t whine about what you read in vain.
Very informative article. Much obliged. In the 70s of the twentieth century, the “pie” plate was to the left of the fork, in the photo it is placed above the teeth of the fork and the dessert knife is on top, how can this be commented on?
Thank you very much! Very informative, interesting and useful!
Thanks for the article! In our primitive “progmatic-rational” time of disposable tableware, plastic tablecloths and tea bags littering our world, we really want classics, beauty and stability, at least in the form of porcelain sets. Glory to the second plate!
The author is somehow supposed to know that there are no “silver plated” plates, and indeed porcelain in general.
What looks like shiny gold is gold. But with white metal it’s worse - silver reacts too easily with food, quickly darkens and comes off the porcelain. Therefore, the white-silver glossy metal on porcelain and glass is platinum. By the way, I strongly do not recommend washing dishes with gold and platinum decor in dishwashers, otherwise they will quickly take on a very unpresentable appearance...
