On what day before Easter is it customary to wash floors?
Before Easter, it has been traditional for tens of thousands of years to clean the house. Typically, cleaning begins on the first day of Holy Week (7 days before Easter). On this day, not only the floors, windows and walls are tidied up, but also old things are disposed of. Except for Monday of Holy Week, it is customary to clean on Wednesday. On this day you need to wash the floors, make fresh bed linen and beat out the carpets. On Friday you cannot clean or wash anything.
Attention! The main cleaning is carried out on Maundy Thursday - the time when the soul and body are put in order. On this day, it is customary not only to wash the floors, but also to read prayers to cleanse the soul of negative thoughts, heat the bathhouse and swim on the night from Thursday to Friday.
On Saturday, before Holy Sunday comes, they do a little cleaning, bake Easter cakes, light them in the church and mentally prepare for the holiday. In any case, they prepare for Easter throughout the week before its arrival. It is most common to wash floors on the following days:
- on Monday;
- on Wednesday;
- on Thursday.
On the holiest Sunday they do nothing, as well as for the next seven days.At this time, it is customary to honor Christ and participate in festive services.
Why is it necessary to wash the floors right from the threshold before Easter?
There are many signs associated with Easter, including the sign of washing floors from the threshold. This is due to the fact that in the old days people believed that if you wash the floor in this way, you can get rich, get rid of enemies and get promoted. At the same time, the coating was washed, starting from the door and ending with the far corner of the house. Coins were placed in this corner, and dirty water from under a bucket was poured under a tree in front of the house. They also believed that the more furniture that was moved during this process, the better.
It is also customary to wash floors from the threshold in connection with getting rid of diseases. People believed that all the evil spirits accumulated on the threshold of the house, and so that it did not take away the positive energy of the household and prevent them from getting sick, it was washed to the farthest corner of the room. Thus, many tried to get rid of grief, serious illnesses of the legs and head, despondency and other adversities.
The opinion of the priests
The clergy are neutral towards superstitions and signs of this kind. They call them echoes of pagan traditions, a time when people believed in the power of brownies, natural phenomena and invisible portals between life and death. Existing signs are not valid. Only one God makes it possible to receive wealth for good deeds and sincere prayers, work and promotion, and also helps to expel enemies from the soul and life.
Before Easter, it is customary to clean the house, but it is best to cleanse the soul before this holiday with sincere prayers, fasting, going to the Church of Christ and receiving the holy sacraments, in particular, performing weekly communion.
Reference! The priests also recommend praying at home, lighting candles and illuminating your home with prayers, since closer to Holy Week the evil one tempts people more and more into sin.
In general, before Easter you can and should clean the house, since after it in the first week you cannot touch household chores or do hard work. This is confirmed by priests throughout the Christian world. Washing floors from the threshold is a superstition that has nothing to do with religion or the sacred holiday.
