Laying wicker parquet
Parquet, the flooring of palaces and museums, has long been famous for its practicality, durability, beauty, elegance and high cost. Assembled from slabs of various types of wood, it creates a special coziness and warmth of the room. Centuries-old traditions and fantasies of artists, architects and designers from different countries contributed to the creation of various types of parquet:
— deck (running run);
- checkerboard (laying in squares);
- French herringbone;
- Swedish;
- basket (well);
— Sheremetyevo parquet.
Wicker parquet, which is very popular, occupies a special place among all types of parquet in terms of beauty of execution and complexity of layout.

Laying wicker parquet - features
“Weave” is a rectangular structure laid crosswise. With this method of installation, square voids remain at the joints of the rectangles, filled with inserts that contrast with the rectangles - the main floor area.
There are two ways of laying - straight and diagonal layout. Diagonal is more difficult to work with, but it looks more beautiful and elegant. Material consumption with a diagonal layout is 10–15 percent higher than with a straight layout. The consumption of material (dies) depends on the chosen pattern and varies from 5 to 15% in a straight layout and up to 25% in a diagonal layout.
REFERENCE.The small size of the tiles allows designers to create a huge number of different floor patterns that form original patterns of various styles.
How to lay parquet
The basis of everything is the foundation. For parquet, the foundation is a flat, solid platform that does not allow the tiles to heave, sway, or creak. The stronger the platform for laying parquet, the more durable it is and can last for decades, or even centuries.
REFERENCE. Modern technologies offer concrete and Knauf screeds, or plank floors on joists. In some cases, plywood sheets are laid on the screed to increase noise absorption and thermal insulation. Facilitating the layout process.
After the “parquet foundation” has dried, the main work begins. First of all, markings are made on the floor with chalk. Lines are drawn through the middles of opposite walls. The first laying line of parquet is fixed with a temporarily installed strip. The proposed option for laying parquet is straight and lay it out at right angles to the walls. Five dies will make up a rectangle, each rectangle is framed at the corners with insert squares. Laying begins from the center line. In this case, it can pass through the middle of the rectangle or along its edge. The floor tiles are attached with parquet glue and nails.
When laying out, you need to ensure that right angles to the walls and control lines are maintained and alternate diversified dies relative to the line to improve the design.
Variety of wicker parquet installations
Three types of installation make up the main set of options:
- A homogeneous braid is laid out from dies of wood of the same species. Square inserts consist of two triangular halves.
- The two types of wood from which double-species wicker is made are contrasting. Square inserts are selected in a color darker than the main floor.
- The three-breed wicker differs from the previous ones by inserts of thin strips, the color of which is different from the insert squares and the main floor. They are inserted on the sides of longer rectangles. Naturally, this type is more expensive than the previous two.
The final operations - sanding and coating with parquet varnish - give the wicker parquet floor a final festive look.
