What to do with a burnt rug

A burnt carpet is an unfortunate accident. But, unfortunately, such situations are not so rare: a cigarette, iron, or coal damage the floor covering. If you can turn the carpet over and remove the damaged area under the furniture, the stain will be hidden. But most often this cannot be done, and it is located in a very visible place.

Replacing the entire carpet is troublesome and expensive. Therefore, minor repairs are needed. You can do it yourself.

The technology is not that complicated - both for a small hole and for a large area.

How to make a patch on a burnt rug

The most crucial moment is to find a material suitable for the patch.

What to do with a burnt rugThis is where small pieces, scraps left over from laying the carpet, come in handy. Another option: when the owners are sure that they will not be rearranging the furniture for a very long time, then they can take a fragment for repair from under the sofa or cabinet. In this case, you need to pay attention to whether the restored part has lost its color under the influence of sunlight.

If there are no such opportunities to get a patch, you will have to buy a small piece, trying to choose a carpet that exactly matches the texture and color.

The work will require several tools:

  • a sharp knife (preferably a special construction knife);
  • metal ruler;
  • double sided tape;
  • glue (see instructions for it);
  • hard brush.

Use a knife to cut out the burnt area (square, rectangle, circle). The exact same piece has to be inserted.

How to make a measurement? There are three ways. You can take a piece of paper and make a “pattern”, a template according to which the patch for the carpet will already be formed. Or an already cut out damaged fragment will be useful for measuring. Another tip is to take the patch, apply it to the carpet and cut out the damaged part along its perimeter. Fitting is required: the size and direction of the pile must match.

If the base is not damaged or partially damaged, it still needs to be cut, otherwise the pile will be of different heights. If you glue without cutting out the base, you will have to equalize the height of the threads - this is much more difficult. Adhesive tape is attached to the bottom of the patch along the edges to protect the threads from falling out.

Gluing the new part is not at all difficult. The main thing is good glue and press.

If you need to protect the floor, then a piece of material that is impenetrable but holds adhesive and is quite dense, such as thin cardboard, is suitable.

After the glue has dried, the carpet must be combed: the longer the pile, the more invisible the patch.

Good advice: for restoration, it is better to cut out a slightly larger piece from a damaged rug than to leave a few burnt fibers.

Efforts to restore an attractive interior should not be in vain.

How to fix a small hole in a rug

What to do with a burnt rugYou can repeat all the same procedures as with a large patch for a small burnt piece. But there are other options.

First. For very small or (shallow) marks, an original method is proposed - without purchasing material for a patch. This, again, is only possible when part of the carpet is under the furniture or sofa and will always be hidden from view.

First remove all burnt or darkened (yellowed) threads.Then, cut a little pile of the required length in an inconspicuous place: it will be needed to align the damaged fragment. Next, carefully glue the fibers, observing density and direction.

A certain amount of care is required when “building up the pile”: it is worth taking a closer look at the arrangement of the threads and restoring the carpet properly.

After the glue under the fibers has dried (under slight pressure), you need to comb the restored area and the part of the carpet adjacent to it.

Second way. With acrylic paints that are resistant to water, you can paint over a not too large stain from hot objects: only the color must be chosen perfectly and you will have to paint over each thread separately.
