Features of installation of various types of skirting boards
Before installation, you must select the appropriate option. There are two most common categories of skirting boards:
- made of wood and its analogues;
- plastic products.
Each of these options has its own installation characteristics. However, you will need the same set of tools:
- dowels, nails or screws;
- drill;
- hacksaw.
The nuances of installing wooden skirting boards
Skirting boards made of wood must be treated with an abrasive-coated tool, after which they are primed and painted in the required color. The installation is completed by coating the product with a protective compound. Fastening elements must be selected that are durable and will last a sufficient amount of time.
ATTENTION! Unlike plastic, wooden products are quite difficult to join together, as this requires almost a jewelry-like adjustment in size.
Step-by-step installation:
- The products must be given the desired size by cutting them with a hacksaw.
- Trim the ends at a 45 degree angle.
- It is necessary to mark the base where the fasteners will be installed. The distance should be about 10–15 cm.
- Using a drill, you need to drill holes in the marked places. Their diameter should be equal to the fasteners used.
- Then lay the baseboards using dowels. Sometimes long nails are used for this. In this case, before driving a nail, it must be treated with a special agent. This is done in order to prevent cracking or deformation of the product. The head of the fastener must be completely embedded in the finishing material.
- If minor defects appear during installation, they can be masked using putty.
IMPORTANT! It is recommended to cut the products strictly at an angle of 45 degrees, as this will make it easier to join them along the perimeter of the room. Place a wooden support under the product itself. It will protect the floor from damage and serve as a support.
Nuances of installing plastic skirting boards
For installation, you will need the same set of tools that are used when installing the wooden version. The installation itself is much simpler than working with wood. Plastic is much lighter and has good flexibility. It is mounted on a pre-installed base.
Installation steps:
- The clips on which the product will be attached must be pressed against the wall and the resulting locations must be marked.
- Holes are drilled along the marks using a drill or hammer drill.The distance between them should be 20–30 cm.
- Skirting boards must be given the required length. This is done using a hacksaw.
- The mounts are installed on the wall using fasteners.
- Next, the product is installed in clips. It is advisable to do this from the corners of the room.
ATTENTION! When installing plastic products, it is not recommended to use a hammer, as this can damage the surface.
How to put a plinth on linoleum
Most often, if the floor covering is linoleum, plastic options are used. It is advisable to start installation from the door jamb.
Installation steps:
- First you need to remove the decorative profile, and put a plug on the end that will connect to the doorway.
- The plinth is adjusted to the wall.
- The places where the holes will be drilled need to be marked.
- Holes are made according to the marks.
- It is advisable to remove debris that appears during the process using a vacuum cleaner, including from the holes.
- It is necessary to install dowels into the holes and nail the material.
IMPORTANT! It is not recommended to make mounting holes near wires, sockets and switches.
Installation of plinth with cable channel
This version of the product is in great demand, as it allows you to hide all the existing wires. They are quite flexible, which allows installation even on uneven walls.
Installation steps:
- The preparatory stages do not differ from the installation of conventional PVC skirting boards.
- The back of the product is attached to the wall using installed clips.
- It is advisable to avoid the appearance of large gaps between the baseboard and the wall.
- It is not recommended to use liquid nails when installing this option. Fastening must be done using dowels or self-tapping screws.The distance between the holes for fasteners should be about 40 cm.
- After installation is completed, the cables must be laid in the channel and secured with tape.
Installation of the plinth, provided all the technology is followed, does not cause any difficulties. A correctly selected and installed product will give the room a neat look and hide all unnecessary wires.
