How to lay linoleum on a parquet board

Laying linoleum.A popular and reliable floor covering, used for finishing for quite a long time, is parquet. Maintaining the appearance and integrity of the surface requires periodic maintenance associated with the use of scraping and grinding machines, as well as the application of varnish to preserve the structure of the wood. These works force the furniture to be periodically removed from the room and left in a state of repair for at least a week. To get rid of the need for such work, modern vinyl material is laid on top of the old coating.

Is it possible to lay linoleum over parquet?

A properly laid wooden covering can serve as a reliable basis for laying linoleum if the following conditions are met:

  • there are no dips and no creaking when loading certain areas;
  • damaged areas must be repaired and leveled;
  • elevation changes can be eliminated;
  • the wooden base can be ventilated;
  • there is no fungus or mold.

The parquet board under linoleum must be smooth and without defects

ATTENTION! A small area with mold is completely removed to dry, unaffected parts of the wood and repaired.

When using an old base, every square meter of parquet is carefully inspected so that after laying the vinyl material you do not have to eliminate the shortcomings of the wooden floor.

What kind of linoleum to lay on a parquet board

Varieties of modern polymer coatings make it possible to divide linoleum according to the following criteria:

  • wear resistance class;
  • width;
  • thickness.

The width of the material is determined, to a greater extent, by the size of the room: the distance between the nearest walls along which the coating is laid is measured and increased to the nearest standard value for the dimensions of the raw material. Thickness and class are determined by the purpose of the room.

The base for linoleum will be hard, which means that for a living space it is advisable to use a household covering on a soft base. When laying the material in public places, a semi-commercial or commercial type of vinyl is recommended. This name is typical for raw materials that are protected by a thick film, which increases their service life.

REFERENCE! Household products have a larger selection of colors and patterns.

Laying a new coating will require sequential completion of several stages. Let's take a closer look at each of them:

  1. First of all, all areas of the old foundation are examined. Visually identify areas that require repair or replacement of the top layer of parquet. Check the floor for creaks or dips. Using a 2-meter (or longer) rule with a water level, check the height differences on the surface. High places are marked with a pencil.
  2. After the inspection, they begin to repair the identified defects. To do this, dismantle the damaged boards and install intact ones, having previously selected the material of the required size.
  3. Then, using sanding or sanding equipment for wooden floors, the marked high spots are processed to level the parquet. After repairs and removal of bumps from the surface of the wooden base, it is recommended to treat the old parquet with biological products to protect against mold and insects that can destroy the wood.
  4. Using the rule, check the relief of the treated floor. The deviation error at 2 meters should not exceed 2 mm. If necessary, sanding is repeated several times until 3–5 cavities remain, which are puttied with special mixtures.
  5. Linoleum is spread on the parquet and trimmed at a distance of 15–25 mm from the walls. After this, they give 2-3 days for linear dimensions to shrink and attach either with glue or with the help of skirting boards that press the coating around the perimeter.

ATTENTION! During the winter period, you cannot immediately unroll the roll! It needs to be heated to room temperature so that it acquires the required plasticity. To do this, linoleum is brought in a day before the planned time of spreading.

If they use glue, they let it dry for a day and then begin to use the modern coating.

IMPORTANT! When laying linoleum on a base that cannot be processed with a sanding machine, and there are nails or screws on the surface, the parquet is first puttied, then a sheet backing is made. For this purpose, it is recommended to use fiberboard.

Using parquet to lay linoleum is not only possible, but it will also save money on dismantling the old covering, and will also retain more heat in the house than any other base for modern vinyl material.
