How to remove brilliant green from linoleum
Once upon a time, in the time of our grandmothers, brilliant green was one of the most common antiseptics. It was found in every home, and many people remember how grandmother would smear abrasions or chickenpox blisters with a bright green liquid. Nowadays, this solution is also used, less frequently, but still used. But sometimes it does more harm than good. For example, in cases where it spills on linoleum.

Why are green spots dangerous?
For the appearance of linoleum, green paint can be called rather dangerous. It has a bright color that quickly penetrates the ribbed surface of linoleum, and then it is difficult to wash off.
Unlike another “ancient” antiseptic, iodine, brilliant green is not a volatile substance and is unable to dissipate on its own after some time. For this reason, it is imperative to deal with green stains.
Another feature of this solution is that it dries quickly both on the skin and on any other surface. Thus, pollution can quickly become old. And given the bright color and caustic structure of the substance, it is quite difficult to wash it, especially if it is in contact with air for a long time. Therefore, it is better to remove green stains immediately after formation.
Important! Old stains of green paint are difficult to remove, so they need to be cleaned immediately after spilling liquid.
Simple remedies to help remove green spots
Despite all the capriciousness of this solution, it can be removed in different ways. Both store-bought chemicals and proven home remedies will come to the rescue here. It’s also worth looking into your first aid kit and checking what you have that can help deal with the stain.
Among the weak and simple remedies, the following can be distinguished:
- soap solution;
- soda with vinegar;
- nail polish remover;
- alcohol;
- mixture with potassium permanganate.
Let's start checking each means.
Soap solution
The simplest remedy is powder. A soapy solution of powder and bleach can cope with this task.
Important! This method is only suitable for fresh stains.
To deal with a stain using powder, follow the instructions.
- Make a concentrated solution of the powder with bleach.
- Lather the solution.
- Wipe the stain with foam many times until it disappears completely.
- Rinse the area with warm water.
In general, brilliant green can be succumbed to simple water and powder. If the powder contains bleach, this will only be beneficial. But it is worth remembering that the soap solution will help deal with stains that have just formed. If the stain has been exposed to air for even a day, this method will no longer work.
Soda with vinegar
Soda is an indispensable helper in the house. And not only in cooking. Quite the opposite: it more often helps to cope with various everyday problems than to help with cooking. So, in the case of brilliant green, you can turn to soda. But before using it, you need to extinguish it with vinegar.
- Sprinkle some baking soda on the stain.
- Then add a drop of vinegar to dissolve the baking soda directly on the stain.
- Wait for the reaction to complete and wipe the area with a brush or rag.
- Rinse with warm water.
- If the stain has become less noticeable but is still visible, repeat the procedure.
Important! Before rubbing the area, make sure that the soda is completely extinguished, otherwise you may damage the linoleum.
Nail polish remover and alcohol-containing substances
This is the next category of what may be at hand. Nail polish remover can discolor and remove the stain completely. But since it is quite weak, you will have to try and repeat the removal procedure several times.
Important! Nail polish remover must contain acetone.
Work with liquid as follows:
- Apply a few drops of it to the surface (be careful not to spread too much).
- Wipe the area thoroughly with a brush.
- Blot any remaining liquid with a rag.
- Repeat the procedure until the stain disappears completely.
- Rinse the area with warm water.
For work, it is better to use a brush, as it will better help the substance penetrate the linoleum and remove the brilliant green.
The scheme described above also applies to alcohol-containing substances. They, like nail polish remover, can also be replaced with acetone. But be careful: acetone is a chemical reagent and is naturally stronger. If used incorrectly, you may damage your hands or the floor.
Proven solution for removing green stuff
We offer a proven product that is simple in nature, as it consists of products available in every apartment. But at the same time, it can be called quite complicated, because you have to prepare the solutions yourself, and also spend time on two stages of manipulation.
- First, prepare a solution of potassium permanganate with vinegar. For 100 ml of vinegar, take potassium permanganate on the tip of a knife.
- Then prepare another solution: vinegar + hydrogen peroxide. For 100 ml of vinegar, take 30 ml of peroxide.
- Take the first solution and apply it to the stain, scrubbing the surface with a brush. As a result, it should acquire a dark brown color.
- Wipe the area with clean water.
- Now take the second solution and rub the stain until the color is completely discolored. Then also wipe with clean water.
Carefully! Make sure that the products do not leave a whitish spot in place of the green paint.
If the stain nevertheless becomes a little white and stands out against the general background, add a little hydrogen peroxide to the water and wash the floor with this water. This is not harmful for linoleum. It will just become a little lighter, and the whitish spot will not stand out much as a result.
