What is the difference between household linoleum and semi-commercial

Linoleum is a floor covering that is cheap to produce and durable in use. It is the most affordable and popular type of coating at the moment, because it requires virtually no maintenance. One of the problems lies in the fact that it can be difficult for ordinary people to understand different types of material and find the differences between them.

Features and characteristics of the household version

This coating is intended specifically for residential buildings, apartments and utility rooms. It is a heterogeneous coating, i.e. it consists of several layers: a dense base layer, a fiberglass mesh, a patterned layer and a protective polyurethane coating. The following can be used as the main material for the base:

  • foamed PVC.
  • polystyrene felt.
  • a mixture of PVC and polystyrene felt.

This type is quite thin - from 1.5 to 4 mm. More expensive models have a layer that further strengthens the structure and gives the surface bactericidal properties.

Since this type of coating is intended for a wide audience of ordinary consumers, the design of its appearance is not limited to standard “houses” in the color of wood.In most online stores you can now order almost any design you want for different purposes.

Attaching linoleum directly to the floor surface is done using special glue or tape, but many simply press the linoleum with a plinth. This coating lasts for about ten years.

Features and characteristics of the semi-commercial version

Semi-commercial linoleum is a transitional option between household and commercial. Its structure is characterized by increased density, wear resistance and high quality materials. They are used for office premises or shops. Their service life is significantly increased compared to the household version - more than fifteen years.

They are divided into two types: homogeneous and heterogeneous. The first type is homogeneous, it includes a mixture of all materials that are used to make the coating. The second consists of several layers, like household linoleum.

Semi-commercial linoleum

Comparing the features listed above, it is easy to understand that the differences between the two classes of linoleum lie in the quality of workmanship and service life. Household linoleums are designed for simple home furnishings and gentle operating conditions. Their service life is shorter and their price is lower.

Commercial and semi-commercial options are made of higher quality material with a large number of layers or with one layer, but combining all materials. It is resistant to increased loads that cannot be experienced at home. Suitable for industrial premises, shops, offices, enterprises, etc., that is, any places where the load on the floor is excessive.

Which linoleum to choose

The choice depends on the purpose of use.If a buyer selects linoleum for personal use in an apartment, then it will be more profitable and expedient for him to take standard household linoleum, choosing the appropriate color of the pattern.

If we are talking about a room with increased wear and tear, then in this situation you cannot skimp, it is better to take semi-commercial or even commercial linoleum, since it is intended for “difficult” places.
