How to raise pile on a carpet

Heavy objects can crush the fibers of thick carpeting. The longer heavy objects are pressed into it, the deeper the damage will be. In most cases you can lift the grain and smooth out the mark. To prevent deep indentations in the future, move heavy objects slightly every week and place casters under furniture legs to distribute the weight more proportionately.

  1. Work your fingers through the fibers to lift them as much as possible. Fluff them with the edge of a coin or spoon, or use a small, stiff brush if your carpet is tough enough to clean.
  2. Fill your water bottle. Spray water on the carpet to dampen it.
  3. Dry the damp carpet with a hairdryer on high heat. Keep the hairdryer a few inches away from it to avoid damaging the fibers.
  4. Separate the fibers and beat until they return to their original shape. Repeat the process if necessary.

  1. Fluff the fibers with your fingers or a coin, spoon or brush. Wet the towel with hot water, then wring it out until it is damp. Place a towel over the depression in the carpet.
  2. Turn the iron on to medium level. Hold the iron a few centimeters above the towel for 30-60 seconds. Set the iron aside and then remove the towel.
  3. Re-fluff the wrinkled carpet with your fingers or a coin, spoon or brush. If the fibers do not return to normal, reapply the towel and iron for another 30 to 60 seconds and try again.

Warning: Do not touch a hot iron directly to your rug because it may burn or melt the fibers.
