When choosing flooring, you should pay special attention to the following aspects:

  • the carpet must be designed specifically for stairs and can be easily laid on any surface;
  • the material should not slip and contain wool, since it will make it difficult to wash the carpet from dirt - it is better to choose a material made from polypropylene and polyamide fibers, as they are easy to clean;
  • it is necessary that the carpet absorbs sound, does not allow cold to pass through and protects the steps from mechanical defects during operation;
  • the material must have aesthetic appeal.

How to calculate the required amount of covering for stairs

To make a correct calculation of the flooring, you must first measure the topmost step, and then its height, adding 4 cm to this indicator and so calculate for each step - all the data should ultimately be added together. If the staircase is spiral, then the calculation is made along the outer edge, since it is this edge that is large. The calculation is carried out from the beginning of the first step to its riser.

How to cover a staircase with carpet

Before you begin covering the stairs with flooring, you must:

  • eliminate irregularities, if any (the type of elimination of irregularities depends on the material from which the staircase is made);
  • loose steps and steps that creak should be strengthened.

Different ways to lay carpet.

ATTENTION! The temperature in the room where repair work is carried out must be at least 16 degrees. And the floor covering should be laid out on the floor 24 hours before covering, so that after installation it does not wrinkle.

Using barbells

When using rods, to begin with, the floor covering should not be spread over the entire width of the steps. You should also first attach special rings for the rods. The carpet is covered with a straight cloth, securing it to the steps with rods.

IMPORTANT! When sheathing using this method, the material can be easily removed and cleaned.

Using planks

Before covering, you should prepare slats with spikes from the timber, to which the material will then cling like hooks. Thorns are made from carnations arranged in two rows. Their points will come out.

ATTENTION! Of course, the bars can be glued with glue, but only if the stairs are level. If the surface of the steps is uneven, it is better to nail them down.

Procedure:

  1. On the side of each step, along the bottom of the riser, tenon bars should be nailed. Next, at the junction of the riser and the ledge, you need to attach bar corners with spikes.
  2. Having nailed the bars, a felt backing should be placed along the entire length of the structure, which is secured with staples. They should press the flooring tightly against the ledges of the stairs.
  3. In the gaps between the slats, the material must be tensioned using a chisel. Then tap them in the places where the bars are located.
  4. To prevent the carpet from wrinkled after covering, identical wedge-shaped cuts are made on it in the folded edge.
  5. At the point where the carpet material meets the wall, all excess material is cut off along the fold line using a cutting tool.
  6. Then the edges are pressed against the steps with a chisel.
  7. At the last approach, the end of the material is clamped with a rail bent in the shape of a V, which is then screwed to the floor and all edges are covered with a metal strip.

Using glue

If you decide to use this method, then before covering the steps you need to clean and wash them, and only after that proceed to the main work:

  1. First mix the glue and solvent. Stir well. Next, apply this mixture with a spatula onto the steps.
  2. Place a previously prepared strip of carpet on the layer of glue, press it and iron it with a spatula with a rubber tip.
  3. Repeat the same steps with the risers of the structure.
  4. After the glue layer has completely dried, it is necessary to remove the excess that spoils the appearance.

Features of laying carpet on spiral staircases

When covering spiral staircases with flooring, there are some points to consider:

  1. Carpet finishing is done with pieces cut and cut for each individual projection of the structure.
  2. The carpet must be cut into separate pieces, the dimensions of which must be larger than the size of the riser and tread together.

Carpet overlays on steps

To sheathe the steps in an original way, you can make overlays for each of them from carpet. Such details have the following advantages:

  • when covering, this method is easy and simple;
  • such overlays have an original appearance;
  • you can use flooring of different tones;
  • they prevent the steps from quickly deteriorating during use.
