Pros and cons of carpet

Carpet.Flooring plays an important role in shaping the finished style of a room, providing a comfortable atmosphere and filling the room with coziness. That is why you should choose it with special attention, guided not only by appearance, but also by quality characteristics.

What is carpet, its types

Carpet consists of pile, secured with a special fabric on a single-layer or two-layer base. Today, there are many carpet options on the market: they differ in composition, type of base, manufacturing technology, density and length of pile and other characteristics.

The main materials for the production of pile are wool, polypropylene, polyamide, polyester, polyacrylic, etc. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages, so the choice should be based on the individual preferences, needs and financial capabilities of the buyer.

Thus, wool is the most environmentally friendly and fire-resistant, but is characterized by a high price and is not durable. Carpets made of polyamide (nylon) are inexpensive and wear-resistant, and also have a particularly soft and elastic pile, however, the synthetic fibers of the material can have a negative impact on human health and cause allergic reactions.

IMPORTANT: You can often find floor coverings that combine several components at once. In this case, the main attention should be paid to the proportions of the content of materials.

Natural or synthetic jute, felt or rubber can be used as a base, which also has a significant impact on the quality characteristics of the coating. The rubber base is hard, does not undergo deformation and does not slip on the floor, suitable for high-traffic areas.

Natural and synthetic jute is resistant to high humidity, is particularly strong and durable, and is suitable even for office premises. Felt-based carpet, as a rule, is used to cover parquet boards, and is characterized by resistance to mechanical stress, as well as improved softness and comfort.

Carpet characteristics

The main characteristics of carpet are softness, strength and durability. Before purchasing, you need to carefully study the quality of the pile: it should be pleasant to the touch, the fibers should fit tightly together and not fall out.

The quality and durability of flooring largely depend on its manufacturing technology. So, carpet is distinguished:

  1. Woven. The most expensive and most durable type of covering, made according to the principle of a real carpet. As a rule, it is made from natural materials, less often a small amount of nylon is added.
  2. Tufted. The manufacturing technology is based on fixing the base with glue, due to which this type of carpet is particularly rigid and has a wide variety of pile configurations.
  3. Needle-punched. It is made according to the felt boot principle, without the use of loops.Carpet made using needle-punched technology is characterized by excellent strength and durability, a budget price, as well as a high level of noise absorption, due to which it is always popular when decorating theaters and office premises.

Needle-punched carpet is a budget option for an apartment.

IMPORTANT: When purchasing carpet, you should take into account the characteristics of the room in which it will be located. For rooms with high traffic, it is better to give preference to easy-to-care and durable synthetic materials, and for living rooms, especially bedrooms, it is better to buy a more expensive coating with soft and hypoallergenic natural pile.

Pros and cons of carpet for an apartment

The popularity of this type of flooring is due to a number of its advantages:

  • secured with a plinth and does not slip on the floor;
  • unlike carpets that have standard sizes, carpet sold in rolls can be laid in a room of any size;
  • suitable for use in any room, can be laid on floors made of boards, concrete, parquet, laminate, hardboard and other materials;
  • retains heat well in the room, creates a comfortable and cozy atmosphere in it;
  • has good sound insulation;
  • easy to install, does not require special knowledge and skills;
  • does not require special care: carpet can be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner or special carpet cleaners.

The advantage of carpet is that it is easy to install.

The disadvantages of carpet include its ability to accumulate dust, which creates a favorable atmosphere for the growth of bacteria and increases the risk of developing allergies in household members prone to it.
