Connecting the sink to the sewer: instructions

Are you afraid to connect the sink to the sewer yourself? You are right to be afraid, this is not an easy matter. But if you still take it up and do it, you will be able to save on the services of a specialist both now and in case of problems - after all, you will know exactly what you did and how, and it is always easier to fix your own than someone else’s. Well, let's get started!

Preparatory activities

First of all, we will need to assemble the siphon. How, you don’t know what it is? By the way, this is such a magical device, thanks to which odors from the sewer do not get into your bathroom and kitchen. It is located under the sink and forms a water plug, which blocks these odors. The drain and overflow are connected to it, and it itself is connected to the sewer system, which is exactly what we need.What's under the sink?

Have you discovered that there is an old trap on your sink that you need to get rid of? No problem, we'll dismantle it.

It all starts with unscrewing the screw, which is located exactly in the middle of the drain grate.Removing the old siphon.

Reference. Often people encounter difficulties already at this stage: the screw may not be unscrewed due to rust or old dirt. In this case, you need to start unscrewing the fasteners from below and carefully loosen the grille. If this method does not help, there are special solvents for these purposes.

Unscrewed? And the bottom part too? Now all that remains is to clean the drain pipe and plug it tightly with a rag - a temporary siphon substitute that will save you from odors during the repair.

Now let’s move on to the brand new, clean siphon that we have to assemble.

Reference. There are three types of them: from a corrugated pipe, from a rigid pipe, and also from a bottle.

Since the third of them is the most popular at present, we will talk about it. And to consider both situations, let’s imagine that you have two siphons: one for the bathroom, the other for the kitchen. Let's start with the first one.Bottle siphon under the sink.

First, check the instructions to ensure that all elements are included, and this applies to both the bathtub and the kitchen. If something is missing, then before it’s too late, buy the missing part in the store. Everything is fine? Then we assemble the water seal glass. To do this, insert a seal into the bottom cover and screw it tightly to the main part.

Important! When working with plastic, tighten the elements only by hand, without using a wrench, otherwise you may damage them.

Now insert the upper pipe into the glass and secure it with a nut. If the sink is equipped with an overflow hole, now you need to connect a pipe to the glass, which will later be connected to it (it is through it that the water will flow). You will not confuse the holes for the overflow pipe and for the outlet to the sewer, because the second is much wider.

Now we connect the resulting structure to the sink. But first, install the drain grate on the bowl. We attach the “masterpiece” we have assembled to the bottom and fasten it with a long screw (the same as the one we unscrewed with effort at the very beginning, only with a new one).

Let's move on to the siphon for the kitchen, which can be the same as for the bathroom, or may have additional elements, such as:

  • two sockets for a double sink;
  • additional outlet for connecting a washing machine or dishwasher;
  • garbage shredder.

Let's imagine that ours has two sockets and an additional outlet. Then, when assembling, you must “try it on” to the sink, because in this case accuracy comes first. This is done after screwing the lid to the glass and connecting it to the pipes and sockets.

Important! Don't forget about the rubber seals! They allow you to gently connect parts to each other without deforming them, and also increase the tightness of the joints.

To connect the washing machine and dishwasher, we screw in two outlet fittings. They are different (there are also those that are not connected to the siphon, but are immediately discharged into the sewer system). Now it's time to move on to the main step!

Connecting the sink to the bathroom drain

We screw the corrugated pipe at one end to the siphon, then bring it to the sewer outlet. Its diameter should be larger, but in any case I do not recommend putting it on like that. It is better to use a rubber cuff, as it is more reliable and reduces the risk of leaks. Don't forget to lubricate it with silicone sealant and then remove the excess with a rag.Siphon under the bathroom sink.

Reference. It is not necessary to use corrugated pipe. This is a faster and easier method, but you can also connect a hard one. Such work will require precise preliminary measurements and a certain skill during assembly, so if you do not have it, it is better to contact the services of a plumber.

How to connect a sink to a drain in the kitchen

Here the sequence of actions is no different from the previous version:

  • we connect the corrugation to the siphon, placing a rubber gasket under it, and screw it with a nut - you can also additionally lubricate it with sealant;
  • We put a rubber cuff on the other end of the pipe;
  • We lubricate both the inner part of the cuff and the outer part of the cuff with sealant;
  • We put one tightly on top of the other.

After this, you can connect the water supply in both the bathroom and kitchen. For this purpose, flexible hoses for hot and cold water are used, connected at one end to the tap and the other to the water pipe. But that's a completely different story. The main thing is that now all the water that comes from the tap will flow into the sewer, and not onto your floor. By the way, don’t forget to check this by running the water and inspecting all the joints. There shouldn't be a single drop on them.

In addition, after ventilating the room after renovation, drain some water, close the tap and sniff. It shouldn't smell like sewer. If the smell is noticeable, it means that you either did not ventilate the room well enough, or there is something wrong with the siphon. You can disassemble it and reassemble it, or you can give up and still call a plumber.

Done? Congratulations! You just connected the sink to the sewer with your own hands, both in the toilet and in the kitchen!
