What is needed to dismantle a kitchen faucet?
Before starting disassembly, let's prepare the main tool and auxiliary items:
- wrenches - selected depending on the size of the faucet clamps (common options are 10, 11, 22, 24);
- adjustable wrenches (at least two);
- screwdriver (Phillips or regular, determined by the shape of the faucet fastener);
- cutting tool (grinder);
- flashlight;
- bucket for collecting water;
- rags;
- chemicals (kerosene, universal lubricant);
- technical knife.
How to remove a faucet from a kitchen sink
Let's consider the sequence of operations.
Turn off the water supply valve to the mixer. We will drain the remaining liquid leaking from the pipelines into a bucket. We put rags on the floor - they will come in handy if an accidental leak occurs.
Reference! The valve device can be located at the entrance to the apartment, located separately in front of the kitchen or directly under the washbasin. In the latter case, we do not recommend closing only this component, because in the process you risk accidentally opening it with your hands.
To stabilize the pressure in the pipes, open the tap.
We dismantle the old device. To do this, unscrew the nut located at the bottom of the sink and fixing its body. Alternatively, the plumbing fixtures can be secured using 2 side studs, which we work with with a screwdriver.
We remove 2 hoses - hot and cold water supply, leading to the mixer, using wrenches 22, 24, and unfastening the union nuts.
There are nuances to working with a washbasin built into a kitchen cabinet. The structure will have to be dismantled (in cases of poor visibility we use a flashlight):
- inside the cabinet, unscrew the nut that secures the faucet to the countertop;
- we remove the siphon - these devices are structurally different, they have a nut - we unscrew it, freeing the lower part of the plumbing;
- an alternative to the previous action would be to remove the corrugated tube from the sewer pipe, which is less convenient to do;
- disconnect the water hoses;
- if there is a layer of sealant on the sink, use a knife blade to remove the part that prevents manipulation;
- inside the cabinet there are bolts that secure the tabletop and washbasin together; we separate these elements (to find them, look at the inside surface of the cabinet);
- lift and turn the washbasin over - you will find a fastening nut, we work with it using 2 adjustable wrenches, on both sides.
Reference! Over time, old equipment can become covered with rust, plaque, and salt scale, which makes dismantling difficult. Use kerosene or universal WD-40. Saturate the problem area generously with the product applied to a rag. Wait up to 15 minutes and try to unscrew the stubborn element. In cases where the device being dismantled is not planned for further use, use a grinder - use it to cut the valve body and retainer.
We strictly follow the work procedure in order to avoid unpleasant consequences, for example, flooding of neighbors.
Disassembling a kitchen faucet is not a difficult task. To carry out the work, you must first prepare tools and materials, then perform dismantling steps sequentially. Difficulties may arise with parts covered in rust, but this is a solvable problem. Remember that a working knowledge of the basics of plumbing will save you from unnecessary expenses.
