Why does the mirror in the shower stall peel off?
Recently, many people prefer to install functional shower cabins instead of large bathtubs. They are easy to use, significantly save space in a cramped bathroom, but also require special attention. This also applies to the mirror, if there is one in the shower stall. Under the influence of unfavorable factors, it can quickly lose its attractive appearance and become unusable. Following certain recommendations will help extend its service life.

Why does the mirror in the shower peel off?
Any mirrors need careful care, especially in bathrooms, which are characterized by the following parameters:
- temperature changes;
- high humidity;
- too much steam and insufficient air circulation.
Constant exposure to these conditions can lead to the destruction of the reflective layer of the mirror, as a result of which it will fade and eventually cease to fulfill its purpose. Experts emphasize that the service life of the mirror surface largely depends on the materials used in manufacturing.
ATTENTION! When exposed to steam and moisture, aluminum amalgam quickly cracks, so in rooms with high humidity it is recommended to use products with a silver base, although they are much more expensive.
Regardless of the type of amalgam, it is important to provide the shower cabin elements with careful care and additional protection from moisture.
How to care for a mirror in a shower stall
Mirrors in the shower stall most often become unusable, as they are constantly exposed to adverse factors. How to prevent this? The destruction of the reflective layer begins from the perimeter, so you can cover the edges with ordinary tape. This little trick helps to significantly extend the life of the mirror. For prevention purposes, it is also recommended to minimize the impact of negative conditions:
- think about an exhaust ventilation device;
- do not close the shower door after use;
- ventilate the bathroom more often;
- Wipe the mirror surface dry every time after a shower.
REFERENCE! To make the glass fog less, it is treated with glycerin or gelatin solution (1 tablespoon per 1 glass of water). A special tool used by motorists is also suitable for these purposes.
Among other things, regular cleaning will help maintain an aesthetically attractive appearance. The main thing is to carry it out according to all the rules. First, remove dust and possible dirt with a soft, dry cloth (it is not recommended to skip this step, otherwise subsequent wet wiping will only rub off all the dirt and complicate the task for ourselves). After getting rid of dust, the surface is treated with a special glass cleaner. At the end, everything is polished with newspapers, removing stains.
IMPORTANT! When cleaning, do not use hard brushes. You should use a soft flannel cloth or paper towels to avoid scratching anything.
Thus, to maintain the attractive appearance of the mirror, it is quite enough to wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after each use of the shower cabin. It is also necessary to carry out regular cleaning using cleaning products. Some folk recipes will also help you shine:
- Leave lemon juice on the reflective surface for a while and then rub it thoroughly with a soft cloth.
- You can use regular potatoes. There will be no trace of dirt left if you rub the surface well with half a raw tuber, then rinse it with water and wipe dry.
- You can restore the original shine using ammonia, which is diluted in equal proportions with water. Use the resulting solution to thoroughly wipe the glass and polish it with crumpled newspaper sheets or paper towels.
- Mirrors in the shower stall can be easily cleaned with vodka diluted with water (1:2 ratio).
- Brewed tea, vinegar solution and some other available means will help restore the product’s cleanliness.
Proper care requires some effort, but all the work pays off by increasing the life of the mirror and maintaining its original appearance for a long time.
