How to age a mirror at home

Tools and materials for working with mirrors

To create a vintage product, we will need to prepare the following.

• Paint remover.
• Mirror.
• Aerosol with paint of the required shade.
• Hydrochloric acid.
• Putty knife.
• Paper and soft towel.
• Protective clothing: mask, thick gloves, goggles.
• Newspaper.

Most of the working material can be purchased at a hardware store. Acid is sold in reagent stores.

Important! To be able to work with paint and hydrochloric acid, choose places to work with good ventilation.

How to age a mirror yourself

Before you begin the process of creating a distressed piece, figure out what pattern and design you want to end up with. It is best to sketch out a sketch on a piece of paper to see a clear example of future work.

Important! When working with chemicals, do not forget about safety measures and use special protective clothing.

Work algorithm

• We prepare the work area.To do this, we lay an oilcloth on the table and a newspaper on top.
• If the mirror surface is in a frame, you need to carefully remove it.
• Cover the back of the product with paint remover aerosol.. Wait a couple of minutes, then remove the coating with a small spatula. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the mirror surface.

Advice. If the paint doesn't come off well, apply another coat of spray.

• Wipe the mirror part of the object with a damp cloth or napkin. Use a dry cloth to remove excess liquid and lint from the mirror surface.
• Carefully pour hydrochloric acid into the jar through a funnel. Spray the mirror surface with an aerosol.
• Finish the edges intensively for added drama.
• Use a dry cloth to remove excess substance. Wipe the mirror surface with a damp towel.
  On top we cover the edges of the product with colored paint.
• After the paint has dried, you can safely insert the vintage mirror into the frame.

You can easily make a real work of art from an ordinary mirror at home. The main thing is to stock up on the necessary materials and patience.
