DIY bedside table

A wooden bedside table is an important and functional part of the interior for any bedroom. Today we will analyze in detail the process of choosing a cabinet design, discuss the algorithm for making this furniture with your own hands and give some tips on fastening it to the wall! Making your own bedside table is quite possible.

Choosing the design and construction of the future bedside table

The choice of design begins with several criteria simultaneously:

  1. Deep analysis of your taste preferences. You have to think - what style of bedside table would you like to see every morning when you wake up in your bed? Your future comfort during the entire operation of the furniture depends on this choice, and the right decision is made only by you and only you know the correct answer to this question!
  2. DIY bedside tableThe realities of your bedroom. Designers advise taking into account the existing design of your bedroom. Try to choose a design that blends harmoniously with existing decorative elements. Using this recommendation, you can add a new trend and get aesthetic pleasure from it.
  3. Opportunities for purchasing various types of unitary wood materials. There are different types of wood for making furniture. It is also not always possible to purchase some additional material for specific purposes and design tasks - this must be taken into account. Also, many mechanical elements (for example, rollers for extending the work surface towards the bed) may only look good in the design concept, but in real life it is better to abandon these ideas in favor of greater practicality.

When choosing a design for a future bedside table, it is necessary to take into account the specifics of its use, if any (for example, the ability to sit on the bedside table or the ability to hang it and use it as a wall-mounted bedside table, and others). It is also worth considering that many design features are completely useless and will be used extremely rarely, which can only complicate the production process and increase the cost of the project.

Required materials and tools

To make a bedside table with your own hands, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Screwdriver. Necessary for screwing in elements connecting technical material and wood - self-tapping screws.
  • Self-tapping screws. It is necessary to take into account the type of working surface (wood) and, based on this, select the appropriate screws. It is better to buy self-tapping screws with attachments for the head, which can hide (disguise) their places of application.
  • PVA glue. It is better to treat the material for making a bedside table with PVA glue or any other glue for the appropriate type of surface. This will increase the overall durability and strength of the structure.
  • File and knife. These tools are necessary for sawing, cutting materials, and also for removing light burrs.
  • Tape measure and pencil.A tape measure is needed to measure dimensions, and a pencil is needed to mark the work surface.
  • Sandpaper. Can be useful for grinding joints and for processing burrs.
  • Work plan. It is recommended to worry about the work plan in advance. There are many online resources that will help you create your work plan, with all the necessary dimensions and markings.
  • Materials for the project. Typically, this is wood, ready-made boxes, fastening elements and others. It is recommended to purchase all the elements for the project in advance or plan the process so as not to spoil the final result - the bedside table.

Algorithm for making a wooden bedside table with your own hands

To get started, you need to think through your every step and decide what type of cabinet you should get.

Preparing parts

All parts must be marked and places of future fastenings must be marked, which will allow you to quickly assemble without making mistakes during work. It is better to immediately place the tools at hand. This will allow you to focus on your work and not be distracted by searching for the right tools around the house.

Parts must not have obvious mechanical damage or cracks. Some craftsmen naively believe that you can assemble a bedside table with your own hands from cracked boards and fix it with varnish or other processing processes. This idea is wrong - use only defect-free assembly materials!

Treatment

The treatment process is necessary to increase the life of your cabinet and to give it a better aesthetic appearance.Process the wood according to your needs and design ideas: the main thing is to always follow the technology of these actions. Proper wood processing is the key to a positive final result.

IMPORTANT. Read treatment fluid labels carefully. Keep in mind that the bedside table will be located in your bedroom - in a living space - this imposes certain requirements for processing liquids. All processing liquids must be safe for your home and the health of you and your pets, in the broadest sense of the word!

Fastening elements

Fastening is usually carried out using self-tapping screws and PVA glue. Make sure that the screws do not split the wood, otherwise you will have to replace the part. Additionally, to give greater strength, the corners of the cabinet can be trimmed with special metal corners, which are sold in almost any hardware store.

PVA glue dries for a long time, but glues the wood tightly. If you made a mistake during assembly, you will have time to correct it.

Wall mount

If you are thinking of attaching a bedside table to the wall, all you need is a few long screws and loops on your nightstand for mounting.

Place such loops in a place invisible to the human eye on the back wall, which will allow you, if you wish, to use the cabinet again, without fastening it to the wall. Screw the screws into the wall with dowels. The dowel will both increase the load-carrying capacity of the hook and allow you to unscrew the self-tapping screw without destroying the wall and, as a result, giving it an unaesthetic appearance.
