Why is there soap on the closet shelf?

Who doesn't want their clothes to have a pleasant smell for a long time? But, alas, during the time that it is in the closet, not only the aroma of the rinse aid disappears, but, often, a feeling of mustiness and staleness appears, which does not please anyone.

Why do they put soap in the cupboard?

Soap is usually placed in cabinets for several reasons:

  • for a pleasant aroma of clothes and in the closet in general (the most common option);
  • to neutralize unpleasant odors;
  • to get rid of insects (most often moths, but sometimes used against cockroaches).

You determine the quantity yourself based on your feelings. For some, it’s enough to put one at the bottom of the closet, while others place one (and sometimes several) on each shelf.

Reference! The amount of soap used is also affected by its "scent strength".

If you put something heavily scented with a strong or overly exotic smell, you run the risk that your clothes may become overly saturated with it, and you will just want to run away from this smell somewhere far away, let alone wear these clothes.

What kind of soap do you use and how long does the smell last?

  • Choose either a neutral or unobtrusive scent.Even the most beloved, but cloying smell can become boring and unbearable over time. And clothes love to absorb odors like a sponge.

Reference! It is not recommended to use household items for this purpose. Although it can be used if it is necessary to “kick out” a very unpleasant smell from the closet in any way and as quickly as possible.

  • Give preference to unnatural soap, no matter how strange it may sound. Leave it for body care. It should be used, not lying on a shelf. Otherwise, it will deteriorate very quickly, and natural ingredients that have expired may, on the contrary, give off an unpleasant odor.
  • If the soap has a strong aroma (for example, made by Lush), then you can store it directly in the packaging for the first time. This will not only prevent the cloying odor, but will also prolong the possibility of use.

Regular soap can be stored for six months or more (until the smell completely disappears), and after that it can be safely used for its intended purpose. This will not work with natural soap: not only will its pleasant aroma disappear in a month and a half, but most likely, by this time it will have already deteriorated (due to the lack of preservatives), and you can only throw it away.

What else can you put in place of soap?

bed linen storageSoap is the most popular option for getting rid of unpleasant odors in cabinets due to its easy availability. Unfortunately, the same sachets that are specifically intended for this cannot be found in every city. However, the choice does not end there. You can also use the following options:

  • cotton pads soaked in aromatic oils;
  • empty perfume bottles or caps;
  • perfume samples;
  • bags of herbs or just a bunch of branches of dried plants;
  • jars of flavored jelly (you can make your own).

The possible ideas are not limited. Use your imagination and available means to ensure that your clothes are scented with your favorite scents.
