Advantages of making a bath shelf with your own hands
We are all accustomed to comfort, and we try to arrange our lives in the most convenient way. Keeping the bathroom in order is not easy because of the many bottles, jars, bottles with personal hygiene products and household chemicals. It is quite possible to make such an accessory yourself. A DIY bathroom shelf will have a number of advantages:
- ideal for the bathroom interior;
- you can use the material you need;
- you can choose any coating for your product;
- will be the size and shape you need.
Before getting down to business, you need to decide on the design of the shelf, its size, and the material from which it will be made.
IMPORTANT! Before making it, decide on the location of the shelf in the bathroom.The functionality and ease of use of the product will depend on this.
To make a shelf with your own hands, you need not only the necessary set of tools and high-quality materials, but also the desire to make the bathroom more convenient and practical.
Bath shelf options
The shelves can be anything you want, it all depends on your taste and preferences, but in some cases the size of the bathroom limits the possibilities, and then the choice becomes obvious. In such cases, it is better to navigate the types of shelves and their areas of application.
Table: types of shelves
View | How to use |
Removable | Such a shelf should be mounted on the wall; it can be removed at any time and hung in another place. An excellent option for remodeling or changing the interior of a bathroom. |
Hanging | The principle is the same as the removable one - it is mounted on the wall. |
Corner | Suitable for a small narrow room where every centimeter of space is used rationally. |
Floor | This shelf will find use in a large bathroom. |
Fixed or built-in | As a rule, these are niches or products that cannot be installed. |
Mounted | A shelf can visually reduce space and is used in spacious rooms. |
It must be remembered that there is high humidity in the bathroom, so it is worth choosing a suitable material so that the finished product will last for many years and retain its properties and purpose. The bath shelf can be made from the following materials:
- stainless steel;
- glass;
- plastic;
- tree;
- drywall.
Whatever material you choose, first of all it must be of high quality, because it is better to do it once and for a long time than to update the bathroom interior every year with shelves of dubious quality.
The procedure for making a shelf
In most cases, the bathroom is small, so the shelf should be located so that the objects located on it can be easily reached. Once you decide on its location, you can think about the following questions, namely:
- choose the appropriate material;
- outline the sequence of your actions, make a plan;
- decide on the size of the future product;
- select the appropriate fastener.
All the necessary materials and parts are on sale, so you can easily make a shelf that will meet all your expectations.
IMPORTANT! Before starting work, make sure that you have all the necessary tools: drill, screwdriver, jigsaw, dowels, tape measure, ready-made fasteners and blanks.
During the installation process, it is best to use a level and a marker. This way you will accurately fix the product horizontally and level. Next we will look at the features of manufacturing and installing shelves from various materials.
Glass shelf
Glass structures look attractive and elegant. It is necessary to choose raw materials with a thickness of 5–6 mm, then the finished product will not only be beautiful, but also durable. Glass cut to size must be processed around the edges to avoid injury during installation and further use. Before installation, secure the holders using a level. After this work, you can safely insert glass. If the bathroom has a plasterboard niche and you want to insert glass into it, the procedure for performing the work will be the same. When installing, you should take into account the thickness of the glass; you need to select brackets based on this. They come in two types: without drilling, with drilling.To ensure that the glass fits tightly into the mount and there is no risk of chipping, use rubber gaskets.
IMPORTANT! The load should be taken into account when using a glass shelf. Do not clutter it with foreign objects or too heavy ones. Use the product strictly for its intended purpose.
It is best to use decorative stops to prevent objects from falling from the smooth surface of the glass.
Corner bath shelf made of wood
A shelf located in the corner of the bathroom does not steal space, especially if there is already little of it. The material for such a product may be different, but many people prefer wood, although chipboard can also be used. The thickness of the starting material must be at least 16 mm. The entire manufacturing process can be divided into sections.
- Mark a point on a piece of paper and draw a circle. This point should be the center. Choose the radius you need. Transfer the circle to the previously prepared material. In order to cut out the circle, you will need a jigsaw. Using a square, divide the finished circle into 2 equal parts, and divide the resulting halves into 2 more parts. Now you have 4 identical pieces.
- Next, you need to make grooves in the rail where you are going to mount the workpieces. To do this, install a wooden strip in the corner and mark the location of the upper and lower shelves. Divide the distance between them in half to install two middle shelves. Attach the shelf to the mark, outline it with a pencil on both sides, and make a cut in the rail. The depth of the cut should be equal to half of the rail. Do the same with the marks on the rail. Make sure that the shelf fits into the groove very tightly. On the wooden blanks themselves, it is also necessary to cut down the edges, but only slightly.To do this, make marks with a pencil so as not to cut off excess material.
- If you do not want to make holes in the tiles, you can fix the finished product using a special mounting adhesive; to do this, you need to apply the glue to the back side of the strip. When the rail has set, insert the shelves. There is no point in attaching the shelves additionally, since they fit tightly in the grooves.
Creating a plasterboard shelf
One of the budget options is plasterboard construction. The manufacturing process is simple and fast. To make such a shelf, you will need a CD and UD profile. Make a frame from the profile, fastening it with self-tapping screws. It is necessary to cover the frame with plasterboard. The finished structure can be laid out with tiles or mosaics. If the shelf is a built-in niche, then glass is inserted into it.
Decoration options
When decorating a bathroom shelf, you should be aware of high humidity. It is best to cover a wooden product with a self-adhesive film; it will preserve the material in its original form, and the shelf will last for many years. There is no need to excessively decorate a wooden product, because the whole point here is simplicity and naturalness. Only if desired, you can cover the wood with paints and varnishes that match the color of the bathroom interior.
IMPORTANT! In order for the shelf to fit organically into the interior, you should think through the decorative elements and select them in the same style and color scheme.
The glass structure can be covered with a matte film, then objects standing on it will not slide, or a side of an unusual shape can be installed. As a decoration, you can use a mount with gold or silver.
A plasterboard shelf can be decorated with LED strip, lights or lamps, if it is in harmony with the overall interior. The niche can be lined inside with tiles or mosaics, and glass can be inserted.
Decor options will depend entirely on your imagination and taste. The main thing is to find the best option that suits you completely.
