What should a cat bed be like?
The right cat bed must meet several criteria:
- comfort for the pet - soft filling, cover made of natural fabric without an unpleasant odor;
- compactness;
- aesthetic appeal;
- protection from drafts - sides or high walls;
- Possibility to remove the cover for washing or cleaning.
The cat bed can be anything in shape, fabric color and design. Ideally, it should be done in accordance with the interior of the room where the animal usually sleeps.
How to make a bed for a cat with your own hands
To make a bed for a cat with your own hands, you don’t need to buy expensive materials. As a rule, every home has remnants of fabric, small balls of thread, polystyrene foam and other available materials that can be used to create a warm and cozy house, sofa, or bed. Having laid out the existing items in front of you, you need to come up with the shape of the future product, it is advisable to even draw a sketch on paper.
Cat bed with sides
To make a bed with sides, an old, flat pillow made of padding polyester is suitable. We remove the pillowcase and cut the filling so that we get a long roll (can be made of two or even three parts), which will serve as sides and a larger part that will serve as the bottom. We sew each detail around the perimeter. It is advisable to stitch the side in the middle as well.
We cover the parts that have not yet been sewn with fabric. We connect the edges of the sides so that the space formed inside corresponds to the size of the bottom. A pillowcase should be sewn onto the inner pillow. Now simply place the sides on the space reserved for the bed, and insert a pillow with a pillowcase inside.
Sofa for a cat
To make a comfortable sofa for a cat, we need a simple set of materials:
- thick foam - you can buy it at a hardware store or use packing sheets, for example, from a refrigerator;
- soft foam rubber of small thickness;
- upholstery fabric;
- PVA glue.
The sofa consists of 4 parts - a bed, a back and two sides. Assembly is carried out in two options:
- The foam frame is glued together, and foam rubber is glued to it. Next, the structure is covered with fabric.
- Each part is sheathed separately and only after that assembly occurs.
The second option is easier to implement, and the product looks neater. For the first assembly method, a removable cover is possible, which can be zipped at the bottom or behind the back.
IMPORTANT! When choosing fabric for the cover, make sure that it will not shrink after washing. If the material is subject to shrinkage, sew the cover with a large allowance.
Sweater cat bed
Having fished out a forgotten knitted sweater from the depths of the wardrobe, you will not only be able to build a comfortable bed for your furry pet, but also give new life to an old item. Only members of the household will know that the soft crib was previously worn.
Step-by-step progress:
- lay out the sweater on a flat surface, sew up the neckline and stitch the seam from armpit to armpit;
- We attach the sleeves at the seams to the sides of the sweater (also at the seams);
- fill the pipe formed by the sleeves with padding polyester;
- We cut out a rectangular insert from padding polyester along the width of the jacket, fold the thin material into several layers;
- we lay the filling so that it occupies the entire upper part and ends on the middle transverse line of the sweater;
- bend the free end down, hem it or secure it with buttons;
- sew the edges of the cuffs.
The sofa is ready. The junctions of the cuffs can be decorated with a suitable fabric or crocheted.
Royal cat bed
If you have an old table and you can’t find a use for it, don’t rush to throw it away. Make a king bed for your cat from this piece of furniture, and the animal will certainly appreciate your efforts.
In addition to the table, the following materials will be required for work:
- mattress or baby pillow;
- textile;
- wood varnish;
- decor;
- glue.
It is necessary to remove old paint or varnish from wood using a sander or manually.Next, a new decorative coating is applied. Instead of varnish, you can use paint without a strong odor (water-based). When the table is completely dry, turn it upside down and put a mattress between the sides. You need to sew a canopy from fabric, the legs of which will serve as support. A hole is left in the canopy through which the cat will enter its royal apartment.
Where to place the cat bed
Place the cat bed where the cat does not bother anyone, there is no draft and there is no strong heat. In other words, in the place where the animal will experience the greatest comfort. Many cats like to sleep on a hill where they can easily watch what's going on around them. Surely your pet is in this category, so place his bed on an ottoman or make a special stand for the bed. The main thing is that the animal (especially a kitten) has free access to its sleeping place.
