What are bed slats
When we talk about modern furniture, we increasingly hear about such a concept as latoflex or lamella. Let's figure out what it means.

What are bed slats
This concept means slats that run across the base; they serve to support the mattress. However, recently, lamellas are increasingly being fixed on their own orthopedic base, which is installed inside the body.
A bed base like this, consisting of slats, is better than a solid one. It allows air to circulate, thereby making it easier to care for the mattress itself, because it “breathes”, and therefore, the moisture that has accumulated in it while the person was sleeping evaporates. Moisture accumulates in the mattress due to the fact that it is covered with a mattress pad and bed linen and a blanket are placed on it. Such slats prevent the greenhouse effect from occurring inside the mattress.
REFERENCE! The most comfortable battens have an elastic arched profile that provides a spring effect when pressure is applied to them.
Why do we need slats?
The base of an orthopedic bed is currently assembled like a puzzle. It consists of two to three dozen slats - lamellas, which are united by one frame. The slats serve as the bottom of the bed; a mattress with orthopedic characteristics is placed on them. Modern mattresses do not have uneven surfaces and are quite heavy in weight. The slats perform the following tasks:
- Ventilate the mattress, allowing air to circulate.
- They reduce the pressure exerted on the mattress, as well as the load transferred to the base of the bed.
- Increases the anatomical capabilities of the mattress.
- They allow you to create a spring effect, which is achieved by their shape. Thanks to it, there is no squeaking.
- Extend the life of the bed.
Which lamellas are better, their advantages
All lamellas can be divided into two types, they are either wide or narrow:
- Wide slats include slats reaching a length of about a meter. They are placed one row on the lattice; as a rule, they are used in single and semi-size beds. This type is ideal for any springless mattresses, as well as for mattresses equipped with Bonnell springs.
- Narrow elements include elements with a length of 700–800 millimeters. They are installed in two rows - one row on each berth. This type of arrangement is recommended for mattresses with independent springs.
If we talk about what the number of slats should be, then the best option would be 26–30 slats for a bed for two people. Accordingly, for one person, the slats will need two times less (13–15). In general, the more there are, the better they can provide flexibility to the base of the bed and, accordingly, will be able to withstand a greater load.
All lamellas are different in thickness, length, width, as well as the distance between them. The best thickness is considered to be 8-10 millimeters, the optimal width is 5-7 centimeters, but their length depends on how wide the sleeping place is. Beds can be 140 centimeters, 160 centimeters or 180 centimeters and for each of these types of beds, slats of different lengths are required.A gap is left between each plank, which should not exceed the width of one of the lamellas, namely 4–7 centimeters.
Lamellas have another classification, namely by the type of their holder. Modern developers install slats on special holders, which can be:
- plastic;
- rubber;
- polypropylene.
Lamellas, which were previously attached to tape or mounted on a metal frame, have now lost popularity. They have been replaced by practical and lightweight fasteners, which make it possible to easily replace this very fastening on your own if the rail fails.
IMPORTANT! It is difficult to determine which slats are better and which are worse. Speaking of attaching the armor, you should choose a rubber or polypropylene holder - these holders are much stronger and of better quality than their plastic counterpart.
Slat sizes
Each bed differs from the other, first of all, in the size of the sleeping area. Accordingly, the length of the slats will be different for each bed. A double bed, with dimensions of 180 by 200 centimeters, requires a slats with a width of about 880 - 885 millimeters, a single bed needs slats with a length of 900 - 990 millimeters, this is provided that they are in one row or 500 millimeters if there are two rows of slats .
The slats differ not only in size, but may also have differences in the bending angle. If you are going to replace them or buy them separately, then measure both the length and width of the existing ones so that the ones you purchase do not differ. The width of the slats can be 40, 50, 70 or 80 millimeters, but their thickness remains almost unchanged, ideally it is 8 millimeters.
