DIY hanging chair
There are few things that compare to relaxing in a cozy chair. And if this is also a suspended version, complementing complete relaxation with measured swaying, then the pleasure doubles. True, purchasing such furniture is not always available: either it’s too expensive, or “it’s all wrong.” But this is not a reason to give up a comfortable corner, because you can make it yourself, without unnecessary financial and labor costs.

DIY hanging chair
Before you start creating a hanging chair, it is worth considering the mounting system. There are several options:
Axial - to the ceiling and floor, they can only rotate around their axis and are an ideal solution for small apartments and children's rooms.
Ceiling - the direction of movement is not limited by anything, and the location depends only on the height of the creator’s imagination: apartment, balcony, veranda or tree branch.
When choosing one of these options, it is worth considering the type of fastening. The ceiling hook is suitable for concrete non-hollow or coffered slabs. Hollow ceilings require the use of fastening bars or chemical anchors.
At the counter there is a mobile version of the chair. It can be easily moved, but it is better to buy the rack itself ready-made - it is quite difficult to make it at home.
Armchair with a rigid frame
A familiar swing, a cozy cocoon or an original nest - made on a rigid frame, these products have increased reliability and durability. If the base is properly processed, then it is not afraid of moisture and direct sunlight. Thanks to this property, such chairs have taken root in private courtyards. But this does not mean at all that they will not find a place in the interior of the apartment.
The only drawback of furniture with a rigid frame is its weight. It requires reinforced attachment points, which will hold both the structure itself and the person sitting on it.
Choice of frame material
When it comes to hanging chairs, plastic models are the first to come to mind. Colored or transparent, acrylic or plexiglass - they perfectly complement modern styles: hi-tech, futurism or techno. The advantages, in addition to the original appearance, include lightness and strength. This material is easy to care for, but you won’t be able to create a chair with your own hands. However, like furniture made of forged metal.
Rattan, wicker and wood are classics of the genre. Comfortable and attractive armchairs made from them perfectly complement the eco style. Wood and artificial rattan are well suited for creating garden furniture. Natural vines quickly darken outdoors, and if they are poorly processed, they quickly lose their elasticity.
Wooden structures are heavier than their analogues made of wicker, but their main advantage is the ability to independently transform wood and a cozy chair, even if you have never had to do carpentry before. To make original furniture you will need:
- processed board (16 pcs.) about 60-70 cm long, 12-15 cm wide and at least 1 cm thick;
- nylon cord - 10 m;
- drill and wood bits;
- sandpaper;
- varnish
The procedure for making the chair is as follows:
- 1.5 -2 cm from the edge of the board, along its long sides, through holes are drilled at intervals of 5 cm.
- The blanks are sanded and varnished.
- A cord is threaded through the holes. To do this, two adjacent boards are placed side by side, then nylon is pulled into their holes in a checkerboard pattern. The final weaving resembles crosses.
- In the top and second boards from the bottom of the resulting canvas, paired holes are drilled for the supporting cords. The distance from the edge is about 3.5 cm.
The chair is ready. All that remains is to hang it and, for greater convenience, add pillows or cover it with fabric.
Cover material
In the case when a solid frame that receives and distributes the load is covered, only 2 requirements are imposed on the finishing materials: abrasion resistance and a color that matches the design.
With “nest” type structures everything is a little more complicated. Their frame usually consists of 1-2 metal rings, the main task of which is to maintain the shape of the chair. The weight of the filling and the person is taken up by the material, and only then is distributed between the suspension cables through the hoop. Therefore, criteria such as strength and wear resistance are important. And for models that are planned to be placed outdoors, moisture resistance is also desirable.
Chair without frame
No less convenient and practical, but more attractive in terms of self-production, frameless options deserve special attention. To make a swing with laces, any thick textile will do. Knitwear will give a special effect to the hammock chair. If there are macrame masters in the house, then you can even create designs that are impressive in their “airiness”.
Soft chair with cords
A striking example of the beauty of simplicity. All you need is a piece of fabric, cord and a sewing machine or needle and thread. The sides of the future chair are folded back and sewn to the rest of the fabric, forming pockets for the rope. Then the cord is threaded through them and the cozy corner is almost ready. You can attach it directly to a ceiling hook for a very compact version. If you first fix the cords on the edges of a wooden or metal strip, then sitting in the chair will become a little more comfortable.
Hammock
This interpretation of the Indian invention differs from the “hanging bed” only in size. For production you will need:
- rectangular piece of fabric;
- braid for finishing edges;
- cord;
- wooden plank.
The narrow side of the material is reinforced with braid, simultaneously sewing ropes to it. The cords are then collected and fixed to the bar, giving the hammock the desired shape. The chair is ready, all that remains is to hang it.
Recommendations, tips, ideas
You can add additional originality to the chair with a seat made using the patchwork technique. To do this, patchwork fabric is sewn on top of a durable base.
The tatting technique visually adds fabulous weightlessness to the designs. But if the chair is made at home, it is better to give preference to simpler and more reliable macrame - the weaving will not stretch or change shape over time. And it’s even better to simply knit the fabric, then you can do without additional pillows in the chair.
