Which kitchen units can be repainted?

All MDF facades are subject to painting, except for the Kitchen with an acrylic panel.

Important! The facade repair itself requires skills and special care when working with milled and radius surfaces.

Paint selection

To repaint MDF facades, you can use acrylic and oil paints. Of course, it is a little better to paint with an alkyd composition. In general, the best option for painting a kitchen is polyurethane paint and primer. The water-based primer absorbs well the top layer of material, thereby shrinking the loose surface of the wall. They become durable and very smooth. Such a coating can be easily sanded, which significantly reduces the consumption of the coloring composition.

Important! If you are renovating a fairly old kitchen, it is recommended to apply two coats of primer.

Polyurethane enamels have a wide choice of shades and varying degrees of gloss and brightness. They differ:

• matte with the lowest degree of light reflection;
• semi-matte;
• semi-gloss looks perfect on pastel shades;
• glossy ones are most in demand;
• High gloss provides an almost glossy sheen and is suitable for rich and vibrant tones.

The varnish is suitable for both acrylic and polyurethane. The first is absolutely transparent and colorless; over time they do not acquire a yellow tone; however, the second are more mechanically stable.

Choosing a painting tool

To paint the kitchen unit you will need:

• old set;
• scotch;
• screwdriver;
• protective coating film;
• gloves;
• white spirit (degreaser);
• several brushes;
• sandpaper;
• primer (alkyd or polyurethane);
• dye;
• top coat varnish.

Important! A kitchen set of 4 linear meters will require about 3 liters of paint.

Preparation of tools and materials

To get started, you need to prepare: a tray for brushes, the brushes themselves, sandpaper, a roller, paint, primer and varnish.

Before starting, tape all ceiling and floor skirting boards and window openings with masking tape. Cover all furniture and the floor with covering material, lay out all the necessary tools on a cloth. This way the room won't get dirty.

Preparing the work surface

The kitchen must be protected from paint contamination.

• The kitchen set must be washed and dried before the procedure.The doors should be free of dirt, oil and dust; for best results, run white spirit over the entire set.
• If you want to decorate your kitchen, you can purchase curly brackets and baluster legs.
• Before renovating, you need to cover the kitchen with vinyl and repair it if necessary. Fill all cracks and chips with furniture putty.
• If there is glass in the furniture, then they should be sealed with masking tape, the tabletop should be covered with film, and the facade need not be removed, but it is more convenient to paint them on a horizontal surface.

After all protective manipulations, it is necessary to apply an alkyd primer in 2 layers. This mixture will take about 12 hours to dry. After each layer, you need to sand the surface with sandpaper, the surface will become smooth and provide good adhesion to the painting material.

Painting headset

The ideal option for painting would be matte chalk paint; it will hide all imperfections; glossy paint is difficult to apply evenly.

1. Apply the mixture in two layers, each drying for about 30 minutes; you can dry the façade with a hairdryer to speed up the process.
2. When using a brush with natural bristles, the facade will become more textured and interesting.
3. After painting, the surfaces of the headset must also be varnished in two layers.

Important! Polyurethane varnish takes longer to dry, has a strong and unpleasant smell, but creates a very durable coating.

Tips for painting kitchen cabinets with your own hands

• Instead of paint, you can choose a self-adhesive film for decoration, and its choice is very wide, both in color and texture.
• Instead of film, photo wallpapers are often used; they are applied to a primer and then varnished.
• The decoupage technique looks beautiful. Special napkins and pictures are used.They need to be glued with PVA glue and coated with colorless varnish.
