The distance from the sofa to the TV is normal
It is very difficult to imagine a modern home without a TV - it has become so firmly established in our daily lives. And the belief was also firmly entrenched: watching TV close means damaging your eyes. This article will tell you about existing regulations and how to comply with them.

Why are there standards for the distance from TV to sofa?
TVs on the market today are significantly different from their predecessors. They allow you to watch your favorite programs for several hours in a row without serious eye strain. However, in addition to vision, the cervical spine is involved in viewing. That is why doctors advise sticking to simple principles.
- If the TV is placed too close, the stress on joints and muscles increases significantly.
- Too much distance makes you squint while peering at the details.
- Additionally, you need to take into account the height of the placement (for a natural body position) and the angle of inclination (if the TV is hanging on the wall).
IMPORTANT. Experts recommend watching TV no more than two hours a day, regardless of its location.
Calculation depending on screen width
There is a standard formula: the distance from the sofa to the TV should be three to four screen diagonals. Initially, such calculations were created for old-style kinescope devices.They are also valid for TVs with a resolution of no more than 720 pixels.
Modern models have much higher technical characteristics. Every year the image becomes better and better, and the risk of eye strain decreases. So, for devices with UHD and Full HD resolution (1080 pixels), the distance can be 1-1.5 diagonals without damaging vision.
The above means that the decisive role is played not so much by the size of the diagonal, but by the number of pixels (dots). The higher the resolution, the more detailed the picture and the smaller the acceptable distance. This is exactly what should be taken into account both when purchasing a new TV and when placing an existing one.
IMPORTANT. Before installing the device, make sure that there are no heat sources nearby. This way you will protect the electronics from overheating, and the plastic case - it will melt and deform. It is also undesirable for the screen to be exposed to direct sunlight. And to ensure good ventilation, leave at least 10 cm of free space around the TV.
How to comply with the requirements if the room is long and narrow
Regardless of recommended standards and personal preferences, the possibilities for arranging objects in a room are often determined by its dimensions. So, in a narrow, long room, there is usually only one option for placing the TV and sofa - along parallel long walls. In this case, it is possible to comply with the instructions, but with restrictions.
- If the distance between the walls does not exceed two meters, the maximum permissible diagonal size is 32 inches (80 cm). Provided that the screen has a UHD or Full HD resolution, this arrangement will fully comply with the standards - 1.5 diagonals from the device to the sofa;
- A large TV for a narrow room is taboo.Here, both a violation of recommendations and banal inconveniences when viewing are obvious. The gaze will become distracted, and the back muscles will become very tense;
- It is advisable to place the device at least 70 cm from the floor so that the image is at eye level;
- The sofa should be exactly opposite the TV. This way the eyes will receive an even load, and the body will be more relaxed.
The standards for the distance of the sofa from the TV are quite arbitrary, but it’s still worth following the recommendations. Then the time spent in front of the screen will be as comfortable and safe as possible.
