Assembling a sofa from timber: step-by-step instructions

Stages of manufacturing a frame rectangular sofa:

1. First, the frame is assembled. At the base of the frame there are wooden beams with a cross section of 45-55 mm. The structure is assembled using a screwdriver and bolts. Special glue is used to attach wooden elements. Most often, the length of the sofa is chosen within 2.5 m, but you can choose any size.
2. Then the frame is assembled from the boards. For convenience, the entire frame structure is intertwined with furniture straps.
3. After the back is made, it is sheathed with plywood sheets or any other suitable material. It is advisable to choose the simplest shape for the back – a rectangle.
4. In the same way, rectangular sides are made from plywood.
5. Pasting with foam rubber. In this case, foam mats are needed to cover the sides and back. After applying the glue, it is left to dry for a certain time.
6. Synthetic winterizer is required to mask all unevenness and additionally add volume. First you need to grind all the corners on the frame. Then they start upholstering with padding polyester.
7. Covering with facing fabric. A sofa cover can be ordered from the studio. When he is dressed, he is additionally fixed with a furniture stapler.
8. Assembling the sofa.At the end, you need to collect all the elements into one whole.

If varnish was chosen instead of facing fabric, then varnish should be applied last, when the product is completely assembled. If you try to glue pre-varnished elements, the varnish will reduce the adhesion of the glue to the wooden blocks, significantly worsening the joints.

During varnishing, certain rules must be followed:

1. The paintwork should be applied in 4-5 thin layers with each layer drying in between. You should not varnish wooden structures with a thick layer at a time, as the drying time will increase significantly.
2. It is advisable to varnish surfaces that are in a horizontal state. This will help prevent drips.
3. When the first layer of varnish has dried, it is necessary to perform intermediate sanding with sandpaper. The varnish lifts the fibers of the top layer of the timber, which makes the wood rough to the touch.

Important! If you want to make a “antique” sofa, then brushing technology is used.

The action steps are as follows:

1. First, the front part of all structural elements is processed with a metal brush. The pressure on the brush should be insignificant, and its movements should be as smooth as possible. This will remove the soft fibers of the wood, and a relief structure will appear on the timber.
2. Afterwards, all surfaces are treated with stain. The number of layers will depend on the desired tonality.
3. The last stage is sanding with fine sandpaper. The pressure on the grinding machine should be light. The main task is to grind off the texture that stands out above the surface, giving it the necessary shade.
