Mattress sizes
Without a properly selected mattress, it is difficult to ensure healthy, restful sleep. Filling, fabric, level of rigidity, environmental safety, size - everything is important, to put it in formal language, in organizing a sleeping place.
With dimensions, this is precisely the case when it is very convenient to apply standardization. This is important for industry and trade, and convenient for buyers. Standardization is based on the fact that the variation in height between people in different age groups is relatively small, and on the fact that one, two or, at most, three people, including a child, sleep on the same bed.
For this reason standard length falls within 120–200 centimeters, width is 60–120 centimeters, and the thickness depends on the type of mattress and the type of fillings.
Naturally, there are quite a few exceptions. There are quite a lot of people with a height of two meters or more, and there are also non-standard beds. For these cases, manufacturers are ready to produce non-standard products, not forgetting, usually, to charge an additional fee for this.
That is, the models come in all sorts of parameters, and even buyers with exotic requirements won’t have much of a problem finding what they want. And standardization greatly facilitates the process of assembling a full-fledged sleeping place for the mass consumer.

Standard sizes
If everything is clear with a single or double bed, then a one-and-a-half bed requires some explanation. It is intended for those who like to sleep comfortably without limiting their movements. One of the parents and their child can sleep successfully in such a bed.
Children's models have a very wide range, for a natural reason. The height of children of different age groups varies greatly, as does their weight. As for non-standard mattresses, manufacturers often do not take this word literally, but simply supplement the standard table with other sizes. But the majority will still undertake to manufacture the product exactly according to the parameters specified by the customer.
Double
The table shows standard sizes for double beds in the metric system.
No. | Standard sizes, cm |
1. | 140 x 190 |
2. | 140 x 195 |
3. | 140 x 200 |
4. | 160 x 190 |
5. | 160 x 195 |
6. | 160 x 200 |
7. | 180 x 190 |
8. | 180 x 195 |
9. | 180 x 200 |
10. | 190 x 190 |
11. | 190 x 195 |
12. | 190 x 200 |
13. | 200 x 190 |
14. | 200 x 195 |
15. | 200 x 200 |
Double beds are considered to be those whose width starts from 140 centimeters. The length starts from 190 centimeters in increments of 5 centimeters. There are especially many non-standard double models, as well as lovers of huge beds. But in this case, each manufacturer determines its own size options.
Here perhaps an example should be given of the difference in sizes produced using the metric and inch systems. Mattresses with the same name King size in the European version have dimensions of 200 x 200 centimeters, in the American version - 80 x 78 inches. In centimeters this is 203.2 x 198.1. If the fact that two centimeters are missing is not very scary with a slatted mattress support, then three extra centimeters can already create a problem.
One and a half
The table contains the sizes of one-and-a-half products, which are considered standard.
No. | Standard sizes, cm |
1. | 120 x 190 |
2. | 120 x 195 |
3. | 120 x 200 |
Single-and-a-half models, as already mentioned, are intended for those who find it cramped in a single bed or have a child sleeping next to them. A one-and-a-half mattress is considered to be 120 centimeters wide. Hardly anyone can explain why this is so, but the tradition is strong.
Single
Below is a chart of mattress sizes for single beds.
No. | Standard sizes, cm |
1. | 80 x 190 |
2. | 80 x 195 |
3. | 80 x 200 |
4. | 90 x 190 |
5. | 90 x 195 |
6. | 90 x 200 |
Sometimes the meter width of single mattresses is also considered standard.
Many, looking at single mattresses, will consider that they are used mainly by supporters of the Spartan lifestyle. A width of 80 centimeters is not too large for an adult, but restrictions vary. For example, the area of the room simply does not allow for another bed. Or, again, a mattress of this size is ideal for teenagers, “for growth.”
Often double beds are also equipped with single mattresses. An ideal solution if spouses require a mattress of different degrees of hardness. In this case, the family bed is united by a common mattress cover.
Children's
Children's mattresses - This is a fairly large group of products, considering the size. But it is customary in the standards to consider children's products that are suitable for children from birth to six or seven years old. There is no special group for teenagers, although in reality such beds are produced. Again, many teenagers prefer to buy “adult” mattresses, which is absolutely logical from the point of view of saving money.
Children's mattresses are those whose sizes are indicated in the table.
No. | Standard sizes, cm |
1. | 60 x 120 |
2. | 70 x 140 |
Manufacturers, as usual, are less conservative than standards, so they offer consumers children’s mattresses with widths in the range of 60–80 centimeters and lengths in the range of 120–160 centimeters.
Round
Round models also have their own classification by size. Smaller ones are considered single, larger ones are considered one-and-a-half and double.
The diameters of round mattresses are shown in the table.
View | Standard sizes, cm |
Single | 200–210 |
One and a half | 220 |
Double | 230–240 |
Non-standard
Basketball players, who are often over two meters tall, need beds (and mattresses) of appropriate length. Statistics indicate that the number of tall people is approximately the same when taken as a percentage. The industry cannot ignore this group of consumers; mattresses are made to order for them.
Not only the length, but also the width is non-standard. If, for example, you have a bed for which you cannot match the width of the mattress in the store, you will have to use the possibilities of individual ordering.
Manufacturers usually add their own list of sizes to the standard sizes. But if you don’t have what you need there, you can simply order a mattress according to your own parameters. Sometimes it costs more, sometimes it doesn't.
Mattress height
Height depends on filling. Springless mattresses are usually a little thinner, their thickness ranges from 15–24 centimeters. The most common sizes are between 16–18 centimeters.
Spring mattresses have a height of 18 to 50 centimeters. The most popular thicknesses range from 20–22 centimeters. Half-meter thick ones are usually classified as a premium level; they cost according to their declared status.
There are also very thin products, their height is from two centimeters. They are intended either for sofas or for mattress covers, which adjust the hardness of the main mattress.
How to choose the right mattress size for your bed
It is generally accepted that fifteen centimeters of mattress length relative to height is enough for a comfortable sleep. But if there is more, it will definitely not be worse. A larger bed will allow you to use larger pillows, and its owner will feel more comfortable. Again, restrictions are imposed by the size and layout of the room in which the bed will be installed.
How to determine which bed size is right for you
Choosing a bed for yourself when it comes to a family is a little more difficult than for one person. Of course, the complexity is relative, but usually such decisions are made by husband and wife together.
How to determine which size is suitable for husband and wife
As indicated in the table above, the standard parameters of double beds range from 140 to 200 centimeters in width, and from 190 to 200 centimeters in length.
The length is selected taking into account the height of the tallest spouse, plus 15 centimeters. Width – ranging from 160 to 180 centimeters, depending on build and personal preferences. If a child will sleep with his parents, it is better to immediately take a two-meter wide bed.
