How to paint a grill
A good owner's house is always ready to receive guests. In the summer season, relaxation is usually associated with cooking barbecue in nature. To do this, you need to be firmly confident in the condition of the grill. To maintain it in the desired shape, it is extremely important to pay special attention to painting, since this is primarily a means of protection against corrosion and other types of wear.

Requirements for paint for barbecue
Not only wear resistance, but also your health depends on your choice. Unsuitable paint can release many harmful substances when heated - this is worth remembering.
In the store you need to pay attention not so much to colors and shades, but to the labeling and composition. The coating must withstand the highest possible temperatures (from 600 to 1000°C), which means that first of all it is necessary to find the mark “heat resistance” (in the code it is also indicated by the first number after the letters “8”). This sign indicates that the paint will not melt, crack or ignite; it is intended specifically for stoves, barbecues, etc.
Reference! The paint must be environmentally friendly and non-toxic, chemically neutral (do not react with other compounds). It’s good if the packaging indicates that the composition contains anti-corrosion additives - this is a big plus for the protective properties.
Types of heat-resistant paint
Today on the shelves there is a fairly large assortment of a wide variety of dyes.Heat-resistant coatings are divided into the following types:
- Organosilicon. This includes all kinds of paints and varnishes that can be applied to both metal and other surfaces of the fryers. On the labeling they are usually indicated by the letters “KO”. As a standard, they can withstand temperatures up to 600°, but at the same time they are somewhat toxic (they have a pungent, persistent odor), so it is recommended to use them exclusively for external areas so that the grill does not rust or burn.
- Acrylic. Most often they are produced in the form of spray cans, which indicates the need for protective equipment (respiratory masks, gloves) during painting. However, it also follows that the application process will be quite convenient and simple, and the paint itself will lie evenly. Acrylic allows you to work in a more serious temperature range (600°-900°) and dries quite quickly.
- Dry mixes. The most heat-resistant, but at the same time difficult to apply coating. This product is usually used in production, where all the necessary conditions are available and after painting the mixture can be dried and cured in a special oven. Surfaces treated in this way are most protected from all kinds of harmful factors.
Features of barbecue coloring
Whatever paint you decide to use, in any case, you first need to prepare. Before painting, the grill must be thoroughly cleaned of any contaminants, including plaque and rust. This can be done using sandpaper, a drill with a special attachment (to remove scale) or a wire brush.
After cleaning, the surface must be thoroughly dried and degreased, otherwise it will not be possible to obtain a uniform, durable layer. Any solvent will cope with this task perfectly.
Organosilicon paint is applied with a brush or roller; in rare cases, small barbecues can simply be carefully dipped into a container with it. Before the procedure, you need to familiarize yourself with the requirements for the temperature regime that must be maintained during painting, thoroughly mix the substance itself, and coat the prepared surface with a primer and wait for it to dry completely.
After all the preparations are completed, you can begin the process: the paint is applied in several layers using criss-cross movements. Moreover, after applying each layer, you need to set aside time to dry it (about 1-2 hours).
For acrylic coating, no primer is required. Immediately after cleaning and degreasing the surface, you can begin painting.
Attention! Under no circumstances should you do acrylic painting during strong winds or near an open fire!
Before starting work, you need to shake the can vigorously for 2-3 minutes. It is recommended to apply the enamel in several layers, allowing time for each of them to dry completely. At the same time, we must not forget about safety precautions and spray the substance from a distance of approximately 20 cm. Make sure that particles of dust and sand do not spoil your work!
If you decide to use a dry heat-resistant mixture, do not try to do it yourself and at home! It is better to seek qualified help from specialists - this is the only way you will get a high-quality result.
After applying any coating, it is best to test the updated grill and let a few logs burn out completely inside. This way you can evaluate the quality of the paint and fix it immediately. For such experiments, 20-30 minutes is enough.
