Disadvantages of floor-to-ceiling windows, which it is better to know about before buying an apartment

Huge windows in the house, starting from the ceiling and ending at the floor, are certainly very beautiful and stylish. Moreover, when buying a house with such windows, there is an immediate wow effect. And this is not surprising, because who has not dreamed of an impressive view right from the house of a pine forest or snow-capped mountains. True, this usually remains a fantasy, since in most cases you will get either a view of your own fence or a neighboring high-rise building. But this is far from the only disadvantage of floor-to-ceiling windows. There are a few more nuances that you need to know about before you sign the purchase and sale agreement.

Heat loss

Huge windows are a colossal heat loss, because the laws of physics do not adapt to your wishes, and you cannot cancel them, no matter how much you would like it. In our region, winter is harsh, merciless and, of course, incredibly cold, and therefore you will notice this drawback as soon as the first snow falls.

In severe frosts, a house with such windows will be 3–5°C colder, and this, you know, is a significant difference. Of course, this situation immediately suggests that heating costs will increase, and not by a penny. You can also install an additional heater, but this will also entail extra costs for electricity.

Plus, if you have floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the house, and there are at least 3-4 rooms, then where can you get so many heaters, and then money to pay for utilities.

Feeling of fear

The second disadvantage, although not obvious, is a huge field for imagination. Many of us are distinguished by some special impressionability and too wild imagination. This is especially true for young children.

The window, although large, always remains the same size, including during the dark. Yes, of course, you can hang it with thick curtains and install blinds, but this is not always effective. When it is night outside and the light is on in the room, it is unlikely that you will be able to understand what is happening outside the window. This is exactly what can play a cruel joke. Somewhere on a psychological level, we begin to very sensitively perceive any extraneous noise and even rustle.

1-8

Such a window (even if it is very beautiful) does not create a feeling of security and safety in your own home. And all this happens on an intuitive level. If you still need to try to fit into a regular structure, then you won’t even need to make any effort into a large opening - you’ve broken it and that’s it. These are the fears that visit both children and especially impressionable adults. Constant anxiety and fears interfere with sleep and affect overall well-being and mood.

How to solve a problem

Everything is clear with heat loss. Here we either heat the house more intensively or install additional heaters. But the feeling of fear is still a little more difficult - it’s unlikely to be overcome. But what to do if you really like the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the house itself is the embodiment of your dreams.

The ideal option would be a design that would close the opening from the outside, since curtains are unlikely to solve the problem. Roller shutters that can be controlled from inside the room are ideal. In addition, this option will also slightly solve the issue of heat loss during the cold season. Whatever one may say, this is additional protection from the wind.

40-8

As you can see, floor-to-ceiling windows are not always chic, but they are also sometimes problematic. But any problem can be solved if you already fall in love with a house or apartment with such a window design.
