Americans are surprised by how we wash our clothes, and here's why

Although we all live on one planet Earth, the habits and principles of living in many countries are different. Which is not surprising, because this is influenced by mentality, centuries-old traditions (which are passed on from generation to generation) and attitude towards farming in general.

Take Russian women and Americans, for example. Outwardly, we seem so similar, but at the same time completely different. There are a lot of differences between us that can confuse both sides. We are shocked by overseas everyday habits, and they are no less surprised by ours. For example, you can take the fact that in American homes you very rarely find a washing machine, which is present in almost every Russian apartment. Moreover, for our American friends this seems strange - why buy equipment if you can go to the laundry. But in general, the approach to washing is somewhat different from ours.

Why are Americans surprised by our laundry?

Firstly, Americans are very surprised by the presence of dryers in our homes. But for us they are already a familiar and quite practical household item. However, it would be possible to dry clothes on the balcony, but only on the condition that it is glazed (so that it does not get dirty by birds or unscrupulous neighbors who can throw who knows what from their balconies). It’s also possible on the street, but not in our environmental conditions. So it turns out that a dryer is the most convenient and easiest way to dry washed items. And it’s also good if there is somewhere to put it.Otherwise, we place it in the most unpredictable places, and it often gets in the way. Although we are used to this - there is no choice.

Dryer

Secondly, Americans do not understand why we have not yet appreciated the benefits of such equipment as a dryer. Agree, this is a real luxury for us, because it’s expensive, and it also takes up space that we don’t already have (at least it would be okay to install a washing machine here). What can we say about energy consumption... But in America, a dryer is a common thing. Local residents simply cannot imagine their life without it: they washed their clothes, threw them in the dryer, 30 minutes later they took out the dry clothes - put them on and go.

Dryer

Why are laundromats so popular in America?

Firstly (perhaps the main reason), Americans are close to the idea of saving: water, electricity and space in their own apartments. Laundry services are quite cheap, and you can pay either in cash or by cards.

Laundry

Secondly, laundries today create a fairly high level of convenience and comfort for their visitors. There are washing machines, dryers, special ironing devices, and other devices that make human life much easier. In addition, many laundries have TVs, free Wi-Fi, coffee machines - so that the client is comfortable and not too bored.

Laundry

And thirdly, for Americans, the laundry is a kind of place of relaxation and rest, which allows you to forget about pressing problems, like washing and ironing, at least for a while. In this way, locals save their time, since the rhythm of life in America is different from ours. And public laundries are a great solution for meeting new people, which people, of course, take advantage of.

Comments and feedback:

Oh, such an article, like there are so many advantages of not having a washing machine, but going to do the laundry. That is, you will go somewhere with your dirty things, you will still store them before this trip, they will take up space in the apartment. You threw it at home and went to do things, but there you got ready, went, got there, threw it in and sit and wait so that nothing happens and your things don’t get lost. It is not yet known who did the laundry “before”. At home, you can even throw in those things that you are wearing now, but not there. And if the colors and material are also different... How much time do you have to wait for this machine to wait for things? They have washing machines, but only the rich ones. We all have cars, but only the rich have them. I didn't like the article. Not objective

It’s because their Covid numbers skyrocketed at first, because all the neighbors do their laundry in the same machine... Well, NO! It’s better to let revenge take over and I’ll pay for electricity, but I won’t wash only my family’s things...

Yeah, someone washed their sneakers, and after that you wash your bed linen - it’s normal... Moreover, you also need to lock up this linen! And the most surprising thing: for Americans, a dryer is a common thing, they really can’t imagine their life without it, but at the same time they don’t just have an ordinary washing machine - where’s the logic? It is clear that laundries are equipped with dryers, I don’t remember that they gave me wet clothes - no, they will also be ironed, but they are very surprised: why are they not in our houses! Let them at least buy cars first. Previously, in Soviet times, laundries were used very often, especially by those who lived in a private sector where there was no running water, I even remember that the printed numbers were sewn on. Linen was handed over and received clean and ironed and was inexpensive, and now every apartment has water and machines and that’s great!

The only/main/most important reason why houses (although not all, we don’t touch luxury houses) do not have a washing machine is the USE LIMIT AND THE EXPENSIVE PAYMENT FOR WATER AND ELECTRICITY. Americans not only have problems with cars, they don’t have soft shower heads in their showers. We are used to washing the causal area with a shower head, but with them, excuse me, you splash with a ladle, with a ladle. And a bath is an unaffordable luxury. In Russia, it is not customary to first sleep in pajamas, and then wander around the house in them, much less go to the shops in pajamas. In our homes, it is customary to systematically do wet cleaning and wash rugs/carpeting/carpets. We don’t wear street shoes; it’s not customary even for guests. In the USA, it is customary to cover the floors with carpeting and, at best, call a dry cleaner at home a couple of times a year for cleaning. We have nice curtains and tulle hanging on the windows; in the USA, for many states this is forbidden fruit. The windows are absolutely open, otherwise how will the police be able to control what the residents are doing there. So to each his own. Freedom in the American sense is far from freedom for humans. Too many rules and restrictions. So they walk around in smelly socks, with dirty heads and torn clothes. It seems like a free choice for citizens... But is that so?!

Everything is much more prosaic. American citizens, who mostly live in rented housing, are prohibited by their landlord from installing their own washing machine. And there is no need to try to explain this phenomenon by the convenience of going to the laundry; this is a banal universal prohibition.

A long time ago, in the early 80s, I used such a laundry when I was studying. It was next to the dorm, washing, drying and ironing cost 50 kopecks. I especially liked the ironing press. The duvet cover became perfectly ironed in one motion. Of course there were those who saved. In the basement there was a large shower and laundry room. Wash by hand, in a galvanized trough, or sit with a book while your laundry is washed - everyone made their own choice.

The author forgot to mention that in apartment buildings you CANNOT have a washing machine. So they have no choice with it and it's not a matter of habit

It’s interesting - few people have washing machines, but almost every family has dryers. Attention question! What is being dried? Sweaty, unwashed laundry?

Well, such a laundry can be great, but only if you SOMETIMES need to wash something, for example, a heavy blanket, a blanket, which your machine can’t handle, or bedding, if it also irons really well. And so, on a daily basis, you’re crazy about going somewhere, and if you have children?, where should you put them?, drag them with you?, but you’ll be stunned by one such trip, you’ll be ready to wash it with your hands, if only it’s not this extreme🤣🤣🤣
