6 cool ideas: what the French plant on their balconies
The French are also aesthetes and many of them like to spend evenings on the balcony, enjoying relaxation and communication with loved ones (or their loneliness). However, residents of France are not always satisfied with its appearance, which is why they often turn to landscaping specialists.
Unfortunately, most of the plants that can be found in the country are varieties that were bred in greenhouses or imported from Europe. The plants are not adapted to the local soil, and therefore there is a high probability that they will simply die without having time to acclimatize.
Parisian gardener Isabelle Aumont created her own company, which translated into Russian sounds like “Balcony in the City.” It is she who helps the French to green up their balconies by choosing the right type of plant and correctly planting it on the right side. And, by the way, Parisians have their own preferences and favorite seedlings that they want to see at home.

Closer to nature
One client asked Isabelle to landscape his balcony so that it would be comfortable to relax there and, with the help of plants, to become closer to nature. The gardener's decision turned out to be very interesting - she chose wild herbs that do not require special care.
In the south and west, feather grass, milkweed, honeysuckle, lupine, mint, irises, poppy, mallow, marigold, sage, immortelle and (unexpectedly!) decorative garlic appeared. But dogwood, hazel, rowan, elderberry and mackerel settled in the partial shade.
The project turned out to be very interesting, well-designed, and the customer, of course, was satisfied.
Balcony blooming most of the year
Another wonderful project, which, according to Isabelle’s idea, should have become a special outlet for its owner. The fact is that the owner of the apartment, where the balcony needed landscaping, was faced with life difficulties, so she needed a distraction. And what, if not nature, helps you relax as much as possible and forget about everything in the world?!
The idea was simple: the pots were arranged so that one could enjoy long-term flowering throughout the warm season. Thus, plants were selected that tolerated partial shade well and thrived in the sun. They displayed roses, lavender, rosemary, clematis, cypress, bindweed, jasmine, bluebells, verbena, wisteria, and for shade - hydrangea, geranium, sedge and some others.
Special mood-zen
The owner wanted to do something non-standard - a composition of graphic plantings, so Isabelle chose plants that grow in the undergrowth: small compact firs, heather, ferns and horsetail.
In fact, it turned out to beautifully landscape the balcony and create an entire coniferous forest on it.
Considering that the space is located in partial shade, it was necessary to choose the right seedlings so that all the efforts were justified. Thus, andromeda, small ornamental pines, bamboo, ferns, hellebores, horsetails and even maples settled here.
Exotic corner
This balcony was created with some special mood. The fact is that Isabelle’s client complained about the boring, boring look, so he wants something unusual and, naturally, special. This is how the idea of an exotic balcony was born.
The author of the project managed to create an entire jungle, which (even if only for a short time) helped to forget about the noisy city and mentally move to a green, cozy garden.
On the sunny side, cordilines, phormiums, small domestic palms Trachycarpus fortunena, aeonium settled, and in the shade - bamboo, willow, eucalyptus, and calamus herbaceous.
By the sea
The plants that were planted on this balcony tolerate drought and wind well, but at the same time require long daylight hours. Therefore, in this project, the main characters were feather grass, tamarisk, strawberry tree, verbena, wormwood, armeria, sunflower and other beautiful seedlings.
It turned out very attractive and fresh.
Small vegetable garden
The owner of the apartment and mother of four children dreamed of completely changing the format of the balcony. She wanted not only to make this place comfortable and cozy, but also functional, so Isabelle came up with the idea of a mini-garden, where children could watch how plants develop and learn such fascinating and curious little things in life.
The author of the project did not just plant crops in pots - she combined entire compositions where small, pretty flowers grew next to herbs. And instead of pots, she chose attractive geotextile baskets. The result was just a mega-cool eco-balcony.
Tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, strawberries, basil, lavender, thyme, rosemary, onions, sage, chamomile, fennel were planted in the sun, and lettuce, spinach, sorrel, coriander, peas, radishes, arugula, marigolds, primroses were planted in the shade. violets, wild garlic.
These are the simple and cool ideas you can find on the balconies of France. As you can see, residents prefer not only visual beauty, but also practicality, when plants bring not only aesthetic pleasure, but also benefits.
