2, 5 or 10? How many towels should there be in the house and why is it important to separate them?
I suggest everyone look into their bathroom and count the number of towels hanging there. Naturally, based on one person (suddenly you have 5-8 family members living with you). Of course, there are rules, following which is a personal matter for everyone, but we’ll just tell you how many towels a person should have, and it’s up to you to decide whether to take this into account or simply ignore it. Perhaps such easy household arithmetic will help you look at this type of textile differently.

Purpose of towels
Essentially, a person should have five towels. This is not a whim, but simple hygiene requirements. So:
- facial;
- for hands;
- for legs;
- general for the whole body;
- for intimate hygiene.
Wow! As many as five! However, none of us wants the bacteria from our feet to “get to know” the microflora of our face. Or, even worse, with delicate parts of the body...
You shouldn’t be indignant and/or upset right away, because this is only theoretical. In practice, rarely does anyone hang out such a quantity per person. Usually their number is much smaller. As a rule, each of us should have at least two: the first - for the hands - definitely separate, the second - for the whole body (bath).
Simple calculation
Whether you have five towels or two is a purely personal matter and, in fact, does not concern anyone.But now we need to find out how many of them there should be, taking into account the recommendations of dermatologists, if we also take into account the change of textiles (washing, drying, ironing). There is such a scheme:
- We change facials once every 1–2 days;
- bath - after every 3 uses (approximately once a week);
- for intimate hygiene - daily;
- for arms and legs - once every 2-3 days.
Here it is easy to find out that for a small family of three people (subject to weekly washing) a huge supply will be required:
- baths - 6 pcs.;
- facial - 9 pcs.;
- for intimate hygiene - as many as 21 pieces;
- for legs - up to 6 pcs.;
- for hands - about 3 pcs. (it is permissible for all family members to use such towels, and not to have individual ones).
We also remember about guest options, because when someone comes to visit you, they will need to hang a separate towel.
Total - about 50 pieces per week! This is a whole towel factory of some kind. Where can you get so much without going broke?! And storing all this is just a mocking rule...
How to minimize towel turnover: tips
To reduce the consumption of clean textiles, but at the same time do not threaten our health, you can use the following tricks:
- The bath needs to be dried thoroughly after use. If you don’t want to buy new ones or care about your health (and skin in particular), then the habit of throwing a towel anywhere should be eradicated once and for all. Well-dried textiles accumulate fewer germs.
- Try to wash not once every 7 days, but at least twice. This way you will have clean towels available that can always be replaced.
- You can wipe your face with paper products, as well as your hands.
- Do not put towels in the closet that are even slightly damp. Remember: they need to be dried very well!
Why is it so important to ensure that towels are changed regularly?
Dirty textiles, whatever one may say, are an ideal breeding ground for germs, bacteria and fungus. It is this reason that often becomes the result of skin rashes, allergies, itching and other not very pleasant problems. The risk of getting a sore increases especially when it’s a hot summer outside. And if you add to this the humidity in the bathroom and the sensitivity of the skin, then all hell breaks loose.
And don’t forget that dust accumulates on towels too!
Exactly how many different pathogenic organisms we ourselves leave behind (for example, dead epithelium, microscopic particles) is better for no one to know, and not even try to look at it under a microscope.
In fact, there is nothing terrible about changing your towels much less frequently than dermatologists require. However, think about the fact that you primarily need clean textiles, so only you and no one else benefits from frequent changes.
Never give your towel to strangers or to a sick person, even to your closest ones.
And if we draw an analogy with underwear. You can wear it for at least a week, but it’s not very pleasant, is it?
