Features of replacing a light bulb in a hood
Usually, kitchen stoves or cooking surfaces are equipped with hoods. Most modern models come with built-in lighting. But no matter how simple the design of the hoods, they also tend to periodically fail. Most often the light bulbs burn out in them. We will try to figure out what is the reason for this phenomenon, as well as how to cope with replacing the lighting in this device.

Why might the light in the hood not turn on?
There are many reasons why hood lighting may not work. In any case, you first need to check the device. There may be some difficulties here if LED lamps are used for lighting in the hood.
In addition to the LED itself, a driver for control is mounted into the device. You won't be able to use a regular tester to check it. To determine whether the lamp is working, you will need to install it in a known-good socket. But before you start checking, you need to make sure that the voltage rating of the light source is 220 volts.
If, after checking, you are convinced that the lamp itself is working correctly, you need to examine the wires for serviceability, and at the same time the button that turns on the device. This is where a multimeter can come in handy. You should press the button and touch it with the probe. If the button is working, then there should be a resistance of less than one ohm between its contacts.
Burnt out light bulb
A short circuit in the network can cause the light bulb to simply burn out. In order to determine this, you need to inspect the wires. If no visual damage is found, check the line with a multimeter. With its help, it will be possible to detect where the short circuit occurred. Once the damaged area is found, repairs need to be made.
The life of the light bulb has expired
No device can work forever. This is also true for light bulbs. Sooner or later, any of them fails. There are many reasons for this: the quality of the wiring affects this, and voltage surges in the electrical network affect it, and much more.
However, before you do anything, you need to make sure that there is no lighting precisely because the lamp has failed. The main assistant in this matter is a multimeter. If the hypothesis is confirmed, then the light bulb will need to be changed. The main thing is that the characteristics of the new light source correspond to those that were originally. Otherwise, the wiring may be damaged or the lamp simply will not light.
Moisture has entered
The performance of the lamp may also malfunction due to liquid getting on it. In the kitchen this is quite normal. While preparing food, nothing else can happen. To correct the situation, you will need to remove the lamp and clean it. Then give it time to dry, and then screw it back in.
Reference. If after all the manipulations there was still no light, it means that it is missing for another reason.
Wiring problems
Very often there is no light on the hood because the wiring has burned out. In this case, the main task becomes to locate the fault location. First of all, you should inspect the wire inside the lamp - it is the thinnest among all. It can be said with ninety percent accuracy that this is the cause of the malfunction. It is enough to replace this damaged element for the light to come on again. When shorted, the wire often simply falls off. If so, then it needs to be connected in place.
The switch has failed
Sometimes the switch refuses to work because its contacts are either burnt out or clogged. If you clearly do not have enough experience in electrical engineering, it will be easier to completely change the switch. However, if you are confident in your own abilities, then you can clean the contacts.
The switch may simply wear out and fail as a result. There can only be one solution here - change the part. If you have the skill to use a soldering iron, then there will be no difficulties.
If the hood is illuminated by halogen lamps, the serviceability of which is beyond doubt, most likely the cause of the breakdown is the transformer. If a fluorescent lamp is used as a lighting device, then most likely the problem is in the ballast. If a malfunction is detected, it must be corrected.
How to change a light bulb in a hood of different designs
Hood manufacturers use different types of sources. And the procedure for replacing each type of lamp will be different.
Replacing an incandescent lamp
Such lighting is installed in budget category hoods. An electric current passing through a tungsten wire causes the light bulb to light. The light is soft and warm. To replace a faulty lamp, you won’t have to spend excessively on your family budget. As a rule, inexpensive models of hoods have a lighting element with an E14 base. The power of such devices is twenty or forty watts. These light bulbs burn out often and quickly, but their price is pennies.
Replacement instructions:
- Disconnect the device from the power supply.
- Wait until the lamp cools down if it was working previously.
- Remove the aluminum filter.
- Unscrew the lamps.
- Replace the damaged lighting device with a new one of similar power.
- Put the filter in place.
Replacing a halogen lamp
The cost of these lamps is slightly higher, but at the same time they work just as long than option number one. Halogen vapor is pumped inside the lamp bulb, which increases the service life of this lamp to four thousand hours. The spiral heats up to three hundred degrees. These lights require less electricity. They shine pleasantly and are somewhat reminiscent of natural light. The lamps have an effective light output. These models constitute the main competition for LED lamps.
Replacement instructions:
- Disconnect the hood.
- Wait until the lamps have cooled completely.
- Remove the cover from the lamp. The easiest way to do this is with a flat-head screwdriver.
- Remove the faulty lamp and replace it with a new one.
Important! It is advisable to touch the lamp only with a clean cloth or gloves. It is important that there are no contaminants on its surface. Otherwise, it won't work for very long.
Replacing a fluorescent lamp
If the manufacturer has installed such a lamp, then the space under the hood will be filled with cold light. The luminous efficiency of these lamps is high, which allows you to illuminate the entire hob evenly. Fluorescent lighting elements are much superior to classic incandescent lamps. Their glow is bright and cold. Absolutely no contrasting shadows. The operational life exceeds five years. True, it’s difficult to call them budget ones.
Replacement instructions:
- It is necessary to disconnect the device from the power supply.
- Dismantling the lampshade is easy; if you have a flat screwdriver, then lift the lampshade in the middle, bend it and remove it. For fluorescent lamps, the lampshade has a protrusion on one side. On this side we move it to the limit and hold it in this position.
- Turn the lamp one quarter of a turn and remove it from the socket.
- All that remains is to install a new lamp.
In fact, there is nothing difficult in replacing such a lamp, but it may well be that some features of the hood can create these difficulties. If it becomes clear that you can’t do anything on your own, it would be better to call a specialist.
Reference. Typically, such devices require the installation of original elements. You should pay attention to this when buying a hood. Be sure to check if the manufacturer sells spare parts.
Replacing the LED lamp
Replacing LED lamps is no different. Most problems can be solved on your own.
Replacement instructions:
- Disconnect the device from electricity.
- We remove the grille, and in some models it is necessary to remove the lampshade.
- We remove the failed lamp.
- We replace it with a new one.
- We insert the plug into the socket and see if the lamp lights up.
Craftsmen always recommend replacing lamps with the same type and characteristics. Otherwise, they will not function or the wiring may be damaged.
Sometimes the lamp does not light up due to their “non-reception” by the base. Here you need to carefully examine the contacts to see if they are suitable for each other.
