An apartment that prolongs life: what is the secret of a Japanese house with quirks

In one of the suburbs of Tokyo, a rather strange building was erected, which was originally conceived as a house capable of... defeating death. Yes, yes, there is no mistake, that’s exactly what the idea sounded like.

The author of the project decided to make sure that the residents of the house lived a very long time and enjoyed their stay in this world. By the way, the building even has its own “name” - Attics of Reversible Fate. By some mystical coincidence, the residents of this house really do not complain about either health or boredom. What is his secret that he does not allow you to completely relax?

Facade and architecture of the building

Already at first glance, the house evokes mixed feelings, because even the façade is designed in a completely non-standard way. It hardly resembles a typical dwelling, since these are bright protrusions of various shapes, and inside the sensations only intensify. Everything here is strange: the walls are painted in eye-catching shades, the atypical layout and ceilings, bizarre shapes and transitions. Even the windows here are non-standard. Some doorways are made in such a way that you can only pass through them by crouching or bending. Agree: you will only encounter such difficulties in an quest room.

And the floors... sharp steps, uneven surfaces, high thresholds: you need to be very careful not to screw up somewhere. And, perhaps, only in this house can you find sockets that simply hang from the ceiling. In general, the house (both outside and inside) is not a sight for the faint of heart, but what kind of idea is this, and why did the architect create such an absurdity?

House

Home conquers death?

In fact, the explanation is quite simple and, let’s say, banal. Living in such a dangerous house at first glance greatly stimulates the work of the brain, because all these transitions, ledges, turns, non-standard openings will not let you relax. The architect claims that all these difficulties will only add energy, optimism, clarity of mind and certainly will not let you get bored and despondent. In fact, it is quite logical.

House

By the way, it is quite surprising that the residents fully support the idea of the architect - Susaku Arakawa. They really began to feel better and even, according to them, younger after moving. Moreover, the Japanese who live in it are in no hurry to move out, and yet the cost of rent in such an apartment is twice as expensive as the market average.

House

There are nine apartments in the building, and all of them are for rent—surprisingly, it would seem. But there is clearly something in it.

The author of such an unusual project, which intended to increase the activity of residents and prolong their lives, apparently was able to achieve the desired result.
