What to do if you don’t have the right size wrench at hand?

I urgently needed to unscrew the nut. Yes, myself! Yes, right now. No, it was... in principle, of course, possible to wait for my husband. (And I even had to.) But what, I can’t unscrew a simple nut, or what? I could not! No, I know the theory that this is done with a special key. And I even know where they are stored. But I couldn't find the right size. But now I know that I can do without it. True, I failed to impress my husband with my theoretical knowledge. He, of course, listened to me. At the same time he grinned. And then he told me what else could have been done with this ill-fated nut.

What to do if you don’t have the right size wrench at hand

I'll tell you right away. Men, most likely, having read this far, you no longer just grinned. Relax, man, find yourself something more entertaining! You don't realize that women sometimes have to unscrew nuts too. And if you still haven’t bothered to tell your wife how easy it is to do this in your absence, keep in mind: she will find a hint here. Well, if you have your own method and are ready to share it, we’ll just say “thank you.”

A bolt instead of a wrench: even a woman can do it

If the nut is tightened too tightly and you cannot move it with your fingers, you need some available tools.

Reference. The job can be done using a device that can firmly grip the fastener and has a long handle.

bolt

Men often replace the wrench with a homemade device, which is not difficult to make.
To do this you will need a minimum of details:

  • long and strong bolt;
  • two nuts, which are suitable for the selected bolt in size.

Everything is extremely simple. One nut is screwed onto the entire length of the bolt, up to its head. You need to wind the second until a certain distance remains between it and the first. Try on the nut that you need to unscrew. It should fit tightly between the two parts. If necessary, this distance is adjusted.

The result is homemade analogue of a wrench. The protruding long part of the bolt becomes its handle. By turning it as you would with a key, you will be able to achieve the desired result.

Other replacement options

The men used a variety of available tools instead of the usual wrench.

Pliers

pliers

Simple and reliable - tested more than once. Using pliers incorrectly is simply impossible! Grab yourself tightly and twist!

adjustable wrench

Of course, if a master finds himself in such a situation, he may well have an adjustable wrench.

adjustable wrench
You just need to adjust it so so that the fastener being unscrewed is firmly grasped by the jaws of the key.

Files

Get the job done and two files. Their canvases at one edge must be securely secured with wire, tape, a suitable ring, etc.

file

After this, the files are placed on both sides of the fastener. This is done so that the nut is approximately in the middle of the blades. Holding both handles of the file at the same time, they begin to unscrew.

Important! Sometimes table knives are used instead of files. Technically they work the same way. However, be aware: sharp cutting cutlery can be dangerous in inexperienced hands!

Small vise

An option familiar to handicraft craftsmen who have small vices. The nut is secured in a vice and then unscrewed.

Advice. Instead of a vice, you can use a clamp.

Calipers

Another alternative option is a caliper. They operate similarly to the options already described.

calipers

It is important not to forget about your own safety! If the caliper comes off the fastener, it can cause injury.

Sometimes men risk performing the necessary action even using large scissors. They clamp the nut with the handles of scissors.

We do not think that this operation should be repeated. Especially if you do not have such experience and you do not feel confident in performing the procedure.

Wooden strip and nylon tape

Not the most traditional way, but why not try it if you don’t have anything more suitable at hand.

A nylon rope (at least 15 cm will be needed) is tied tightly in the middle of the wooden plank. The free edge of the nylon begins to be wound around the nut. Twist the rope until it ends. Now unscrew the bar. Together with it and the nylon, the fasteners will move from place.

Hammers

hammer

Another option for hands accustomed to tools. You will need two hammers. One hammer is held on one side of the nuts. From the opposite side they lightly tap the others. At the same time, they move in a circle in the direction of unscrewing.
