Beautiful, but not practical: 9 controversial techniques in kitchen design
The kitchen is the heart of any home. Here we cook, gather with friends and family, have breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drink tea with our family. Life is always in full swing in the kitchen; this is where almost every person spends most of their time. Therefore, the kitchen interior should not only be impressive (in the good sense of the word), but also practical and functional.
When people make repairs, they often make the most common mistakes. It's all because of fashion magazines about interior design. But some kitchen designs are only beautiful in pictures. In the future, it turns out that these moments are not only difficult to correct (and sometimes impossible), but they can significantly undermine the nervous system. Let's see what techniques in kitchen design are completely impractical, although very beautiful.

Glossy facades
The smooth shiny surface of a kitchen set looks very stylish, and in some cases helps to visually expand the space, but that’s where the benefits of gloss end. There will always be fingerprints, grease marks, and stains on the cabinet doors. Let's be honest: no one will wash the facades every day (unless you are an absolute neat person), and a stained gloss will definitely not add coziness and comfort to the kitchen. For this reason, it is better to give preference to matte surfaces: dirt will not be so obvious.
Textured kitchen apron
When choosing textured tiles or bricks, be prepared for the fact that this will make cleaning several times more difficult. This design, of course, looks very stylish and impressive (especially if everything is chosen in harmony), but dust and grease will constantly accumulate in the cracks, and sometimes the brick will have to be treated with special means that protect it from contamination.
It is better to decorate the kitchen apron with large panels or buy a special film that will prevent dirt from splashing.
Curtains made from natural fabrics
Again, curtains made of silk, satin, linen are incredibly beautiful and cozy, but usually next to the window (or not far away) there is a work area, and this is the same grease, carbon deposits, splashes of water and other things that are generally associated with the kitchen. This means that the curtains will not only be constantly stained, but also smell unpleasant, since natural fabrics absorb odors perfectly. For this reason, they will have to be constantly washed, ironed, and hung again, and delicate materials, as you know, do not particularly like frequent washing. And their appearance will deteriorate significantly due to such care.
When choosing window decor, it is better to give preference to polyester or polyacrylic: they practically do not absorb kitchen odors, and they can be washed often without damaging the material.
Excessively wide pull-out shelves
Manufacturers of kitchen sets are full of praise for modules and drawers, the width of which varies from 1,000 to 1,200 mm. They can be easily pulled out with one touch of the hand, and how many dishes can fit in them... Indeed, quite attractive, but only in the store when you try to open an empty drawer. What will happen to it when you load it with dishes, cereals, and cutlery? Even the strongest guides will be very difficult to pull out, and the shelf will sag under the weight of its contents.
Arch instead of a door
In some cases, the absence of a door and the design of the opening with an arch is important, especially if the kitchen is small enough - this visually expands it. But even the most powerful hood will not rid your home of odors, including not the most pleasant ones, which will certainly quickly spread to other rooms. Don’t be surprised later that a trail of fried fish will emanate from your business suit.
In addition, a door to the kitchen will be a more practical solution when the family has to cook late at night: this way you will not wake up your sleeping husband or interfere with your wife watching TV while preparing dinner.
"Island"
This is a very beautiful and practical solution, but only if the kitchen area allows it to fit into the room. If the room is not impressive in size, then the “island” will only interfere with movement around the perimeter of the room. Therefore, when considering the idea of creating such a design at home, carefully analyze whether the squares allow you to achieve what you want?
Narrow passages, difficult access to the kitchen triangle - you can get all this in the pursuit of additional conveniences and fashion.
Black tiles on the floor
This idea looks really stylish in real life. But for some reason, many who fell for this design regretted it after a while. The fact is that against a black background droplets of water, stains, dust, wool, stains, drips are very clearly visible, regardless of whether the surface is glossy or matte. As a result, the floor has to be washed almost constantly, and the cleanliness of the tiles remains for a very short period of time.
In order not to take up a mop every time after entering the kitchen, it is better to give preference to light-colored tiles and preferably not textured ones.
Black granite sink
The solution is very stylish and beautiful, but short-lived and impractical. During operation, white stains will appear on the surface - a consequence of contact with detergents - and if you have hard water running from the tap, then you cannot avoid limescale deposits, which will be very noticeable against a dark background (and it is also difficult to remove).
Wood table top
In fact, they come in two types: from furniture panels and solid wood. In the first case, this is a more practical solution, since such slats will withstand temperature changes, moisture, and are resistant to mechanical damage.
But natural wood, although it looks super cool, is impractical. It is quite sensitive to moisture (you will have to constantly wipe the tabletop dry), it is very easy to deform or scratch. In addition, when the first large crack appears, the tabletop will have to be completely replaced.
In an effort to decorate the kitchen according to the latest fashion and according to design trends, most of us forget that all this is fleeting and quickly forgotten, but the interior of the kitchen remains with us for many years. Therefore, it is better to do not what is fashionable, but what is practical and you really like.
