How to ventilate a room without opening a window
In buildings of the “Stalin era”, where there are very high ceilings and a well-thought-out system of ventilation ducts, you can breathe easily without opening windows. Modern apartments and office premises boast only plastic windows, construction and finishing materials that release toxic substances into the air.
Keeping windows open all the time is not an option:
- In winter, heated air is replaced by cold air. If the house has autonomous heating, when the temperature drops, the automatic heating system will turn on, increasing the monthly consumption of gas or electricity.
- In offices and offices of institutions, an open window means the risk of losing a valuable employee: he will get sick and go on sick leave at the most inopportune time.
- Outside the window there is a noisy highway, a railway track, and a factory working for days. I just don’t want to open the window to breathe in the fumes.
- Emergency situations that, unfortunately, have become commonplace: a burning trash bin, smoldering leaves in the fall, forest or peat fires.
- The premises are semi-basement. Even if there is a park outside the window, all the garbage will end up in the room.
- There are people with weakened immune systems in hospital wards and intensive care units. The slightest draft will provoke a deterioration in health.
- There is a small child and it is not safe to open the windows wide.

Ready solutions
Lack of oxygen is a solvable problem.Full-fledged climate control systems, ozonizers or special air intakes on windows are offered by manufacturers in a wide price range.
Window valve
Window valves are “attachments” on the frame that allow you to ventilate the room without opening the transom. Serious window manufacturers equip their products with them during manufacturing.
Window valves are manufactured:
- automatic;
- working in manual mode.
This is the simplest device for ventilation - a canopy with a mesh outside and inside the room. There is a valve that can be adjusted either manually or automatically.
Advice. The shutter also operates when the humidity inside the room increases. This is a good solution for unopenable bathroom windows.
When purchasing, you can choose a model with sound insulation, blocking sudden gusts of wind, and with a mosquito net.
Breezer, air conditioner
Ventilators, or breathers, are winning fans thanks to their simple and quick installation and low cost. To take air in, a through hole is drilled in the wall. The air intake remains outside and the distributor remains inside. The flow of fresh air is directed along the walls; there are no drafts in such rooms.
The width of the breather does not exceed the width of a standard office document, and the height is no more than half a meter. The part visible from the side of the room is made in different colors. Due to the rounded shapes, the device turns into an additional interior decoration.
Main advantages:
- Intuitive control: the mode is set on the display by pressing one button.
- Low power consumption.
- Quiet operation;
- Timer;
- Removes dust and pollen (important for allergy sufferers), particles of debris in the wind;
- There are models that heat the incoming air flow;
- The simplest installation that does not require cosmetic repairs.
Air conditioners, which have become commonplace, save people in the heat. Often the air purification function is also transferred to them. Disadvantages of this method:
- cooled air creates the illusion of clean air: it’s easier to breathe in a cool room;
- To breathe fresh air, you need to clean the filter at least once a day (for an office space).
Important: Air intake was carried out by old window air conditioners. Modern models only ventilate the air space. No fresh oxygen is supplied.
Humidifiers, purifier, ionizers
This is a whole class of devices that provide room climate control. All functions (and flavoring, as a bonus) can be combined in one device. But there are also devices on sale that perform only one task.
The purpose of purifiers is to clear the air of dust particles, humidifiers are to saturate dry air with water molecules, ionizers are to get rid of germs and bacteria, and increase the amount of breathable oxygen.
Cleaners are used in:
- electrostatics, when dust particles are attracted by an electromagnetic field;
- the simplest filters, usually carbon;
- distillation, where an air stream is forced through an oily liquid, and large particles of debris settle;
- chemical catalysts, during which toxic impurities decompose and oxidize.
Air washers (purifier + humidifier), even expensive models, are noisy in operation and require careful handling and special additives. Quite difficult to clean. Humidification is possible only when using an additional special liquid, and not ordinary ice (as is found in full-fledged climate control models).And the ergonomics are poor: a remote control is usually not included in the kit, and the display cannot be turned off at night.
Ozonizers are good because they kill pathogenic microorganisms and neutralize unpleasant odors. But they can be used in work for no more than 20 minutes for one living room. And after... it is recommended to ventilate, or not to enter the room for a while. Oxygen ions irritate the mucous membranes, a common symptom: sore throat.
Thanks to the variety of equipment that maintains the purity of the air space in the room, you can breathe deeply and without opening windows. The main thing is to understand the operating principles and use the device correctly.
